Spelljammer Who Are The Astral Elves (Todd Kendrick Spelljammer interview)

I don't know. It sounds like we may get the Spelljammer Imperial Navy with its elven supremacy. If some Astral Elves work for the Empire and some work against it, there is no reason to stereotype the Astral Elves as all brutal or all benign. I really enjoy the concept of the Astral being a...

Spelljammer Who Are The Astral Elves (Todd Kendrick Spelljammer interview)

Why wouldn't elves have guns as well? They had Undead Giant Insect exosuits and could form Voltron. The Imperial Elven Navy was terrifying.

TSR settings sales numbers from Ben Riggs, starting with Lankmar, Maztica, Al-Qadim and Planescape!

And that is the problem of Planescape and Dark Sun. They are defined by artists who had a definitive style that they applied to their own art and other products. I loved the art of Dark Sun. I only used the original box set for the games I ran. The setting immediately was changed dramatically...

D&D 5E (2014) New Unearthed Arcana: Wonders of the Multiverse

Again I don't know that anyone in the design group actually likes psionics. From what has been released they enjoy the wizard class and spell slots. Sorcerer is a bit underwhelming as a class and poor warlock has a bunch of half-baked ideas pushed into it to fill out. Why is Mystic Arcanum? Why...

D&D 5E (2014) New Unearthed Arcana: Wonders of the Multiverse

I believe he is referring to the Korranberg Chronicle: Psionics Primer Here I am cautiously optimistic about what Arcanis comes up with. Codex of the Mind isn't set to come out for a bit, but they clearly love psionics. Preview Here

Spelljammer Spelljammer kernel idea origins by Jeff Grubb

His reaction to seeing the BG3 trailer having a nautiloid is pure delight. You can see him thinking 'That is it! That was what I imagined.'

D&D General Darksun novel sales! From Ben Riggs.

This doesn't surprise me at all. D&D novels took up several shelves even in my tiny local independent bookstore. In a B. Dalton or Waldenbooks, it was entire sections of shelves. And it moved! Until it didn't. The intriguing worlds explored with strong voices began to be diluted by many...

D&D 5E (2014) New Unearthed Arcana: Wonders of the Multiverse

Pretty much psionics is what we got in Tasha's. I doubt they will even create more subclasses. I think Mearls was the only champion for psionics, the rest of the design crew is not interested (not haters just not enthused by it). They did several iterations of psionics in UA and consistently got...

TSR settings sales numbers from Ben Riggs, starting with Lankmar, Maztica, Al-Qadim and Planescape!

I believe the setting contest was a brilliant marketing device. Eberron was a campaign by committee ultimately, but Keith Baker's passion for the setting has been a constant. I think that is what a lot of the smaller selling settings lacked, a champion and face to put to the setting. FR has Ed...

TSR settings sales numbers from Ben Riggs, starting with Lankmar, Maztica, Al-Qadim and Planescape!

Hmm, so my experience with Planescape sales was not just anecdata or at least corresponded with the actual data. What is interesting is what happened after WotC acquired TSR and what happened with setting sales. 3E focused mainly on FR and Eberron with 2 small Greyhawk books to promote RPGA. 4E...

TSR settings sales numbers from Ben Riggs, starting with Lankmar, Maztica, Al-Qadim and Planescape!

I can't wait to see the Planescape numbers. I suspect they will be in line with Dark Sun and Ravenloft. I can see why WotC has been so setting shy with 5E. The numbers reported lend themselves more to a strategy of combining setting into a module to hit as many target groups as you can.

TSR settings sales numbers from Ben Riggs, starting with Lankmar, Maztica, Al-Qadim and Planescape!

Maztica was terrible. I am surprised it sold what it did. Poor Lankhmar. It was always sold out when I tried to get a copy. I wound up buying both Waterdeep City Box set and Greyhawk City to compensate...

    AD&D Settings Sales Comparison 79-98

I like Ravenloft. Played a campaign or two, but there was no shortage of horror RPGs in the 90s. Gothic D&D horror is a pretty specific niche. I understand why the sales reflect that. The majority of the 90's was a recovery period economically too. Planescape Torment succeeded because it built...

D&D General D&D: One Brand, Multiple Games

I would love for 5E to become a much more modular and elaborate system. I think it is a solid system and could handle some extrapolation. What I don't see is a lot of enthusiasm from WotC to do this. From the timid UA feedback loop and the lack of experimentation in the core D&D game, most...

Darksun TSR sales! From Benjamin Riggs.

These numbers show that sales of D&D were slightly bigger than the 80's (post '84) but were spread across many many more products. Greyhawk was supported into 3.x with LG. There was a crazy amount of content of wildly differing quality produced for the setting. The one thing Greyhawk never had...

D&D General D&D: One Brand, Multiple Games

What is the payoff for introducing all these other lines of 'D&D'? Iterative changes concurrently released cannibalize your player base. What customer base are you tapping into? It is the equivalent of searching for crumbs in the corners of an all-you-can-eat buffet. Maybe after 50 years of D&D...

Forgotten Realms and Spelljammer TSR sales from Ben Riggs

Grey box FR was the best representation of a campaign setting until the 3.0 FRCG, just a phenomenal value. Spelljammer was also a fantastic value for what you got in the box. I still have my ship counters ready for the new release.

Darksun TSR sales! From Benjamin Riggs.

So Core Setting releases, do they contain the hardback setting books as well? Or just the box sets? The Dark Sun nimbers feel about right. We played the heck out of DarkSun in my group but I was the only one to buy the box. Same with Spelljammer, but I knew of no other groups around me running...
