D&D 5E (2014) Can you shove or grapple a creature that you're riding?

I wouldn't apply "shove" to any creature you're riding but I certainly would allow grapple checks for those effects. Pulling a horse to the ground seems completely reasonable. If you're big enough and you throw your weight off center while pulling the reins, why not? An opposed check or two...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do You Find Players?

I found a message-board designed specifically for UK roleplayers, and posted in the meetup forum. Originally I assumed I would have to join a group, but I quickly found that when you're a willing and able DM, people find you. And they almost always have at least one friend. Since the game was to...

    D&D 5E (2014) DM's, what's your experience with suggested Challenge Ratings?

I have found the *general* encounter guidelines to be on the easy side for my group (easily fixed), but I've found CR's to be about right. Admittedly I haven't run very high level 5E yet, but without thirty pages of rigorous recipes of the kind that 5E doesn't indulge in, I don't see how any...

D&D 5E (2014) Balance of this? - Pass Concentration spell

This is only true if the target and the caster are the same creature.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Talk About Yawning Portal

Good advice, although I have yet to read the 5E edition in any detail. I have been asked to run a "Tomb of Horrors"-killer party through the revised edition, so I'll need to ensure the players know exactly what style of DM they're up against!

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss Finale BBEG Variant - my players want to control the Demonlords!

This is exactly what I'm doing too...except the players don't know it yet! We've been establishing connections between the PC's and the demon lords during the course of the game, and I hope (although I can't be sure) that these connections will give the players enough of a stake in the fight...

D&D Beyond Beta: Your First Thoughts Thread!

It's now my default SRD interface. Could do with being a little quicker when filtering, but I assume that'll improve later.

    D&D 5E (2014) Puzzle-heavy module?

Thirded. I believe my DM once took us through this in order to have our god bring us back from the dead. It was very taxing and very cool.

Official D&D Character Sheets Coming In June

This post reads like the four stages of collector's syndrome. :D I will be buying it too. I have a nostalgia-rooted soft-spot for this kind of product.

Haven't read the rules, but the name is awesome. :)

D&D Beyond Beta: Your First Thoughts Thread!

You have one free *channel* subscription. I doubt you'll be able to use it for this, but I would love it if I was wrong! I like it! It is, as one poster said, little more than a (very) pretty SRD right now. What it does is demonstrate good design and usability, which bodes well for the more...

We need help with spam banning

I'd like to re-offer my services if this is still an option, but I will only be able to monitor the 5E forum. It seems there is always spam to be zapped when I do my first-thing browse of ENWorld.

    D&D 5E (2014) Your one hope for D&D?

That it keeps its momentum. This is a pretty awesome time for D&D, and I hope it lasts for years and years.

[UPDATED!] D&D Beyond: An Official D&D Digital Toolset & Character Builder

Couldn't agree more. When I left 4E behind, the Monster Builder and Compendium were difficult losses.

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss Advice Requested

I didn't find the initial encounter too challenging. There are drow politics to be exploited, many potentially allies to be made, and if all else fails, a distracting demon attack to facilitate escape! I prepared a simple combat card for the capable NPC's (little more than weapon type, chance to...

New Dragon+ (issue 12): The Inspiration Issue

My players have already booked me as DM for a Tomb of Horrors one-shot. They know the dungeon quite well, so they're going to build a straight-up "Tomb of Horrors"-killer party based on what they can remember. We'll see how that goes!

    D&D 5E (2014) SCAG -- Worth it?

It's a good book, packed with stuff, and solid VFM. It is *not* a Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide, which seems to be most people's beef with it. I've used it heavily to flesh out PC back-stories and build the second half of my Out of the Abyss campaign arc. I have no regrets!
