WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

Their vision is clear. Two stories a year, crunch tied in with the story themes, the odd ancillary product in response to the market, and experimental stuff online. It's the marketing you seem to have a problem with.

D&D 5E (2014) [POLL] What drives your inspiration behind char gen?

I get to play very rarely, so for me it's mechanical. I don't mean as in optimized or min-maxed (NOT that there's anything wrong with that, live the dream etc.). I simply want to try as many different types of PC as possible, and I'm quite happy for the "theme" of the PC to emerge during play.

D&D 5E (2014) How cognizant are you of the rules of the game?

Excellent poll options. I chose "Mostly." Creating a mechanically effective character is a neat challenge, but I feel these days the rule-books guide you away from the most egregious errors. I don't personally have the patience to dig out more than the most obvious synergies.

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

I have a Princes campaign underway, I'm about to join a Rise of Tiamat game, and I'll be launching an Out of the Abyss campaign in a fortnight. No, I don't very much care for any meta-story that WotC is constructing, but the material they're releasing is finding heavy use at my table. No, I...

    D&D 5E (2014) On the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide

Well let's not rehash all of that. :) For me, personally, it's a very nice product, and surprisingly dense with info.

    D&D 5E (2014) On the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide

I agree! With all the negativity around here I didn't buy it sight-unseen, but it only took a couple of minutes' browsing in my FLGS to decide it was worth the purchase. A very nicely done, very targeted product.

D&D 5E (2014) Settings played in D&D: cause or effect?

I run one campaign in the Realms. We skirted over the face of things through Lost Mine, with the various faction choices made by the PC's as the only strong tie to the world other than geography. In starting Princes mixed with my own homebrew stuff, the world is beginning to emerge as more of a...

D&D 5E (2014) Storyline Seasons, Adventure Paths, and New Character Options

I like the current model and it suits my group. The big adventures are great for mining. Trickling monsters and PC options into the mix works very well for me. As long as the mega-adventure hardbacks are continually built with an eye for snapping out material and dropping it into home-brew, they...

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

I just listened to this. Surprisingly frank, I thought. No shockers to speak of, but maybe a few clues as to where "Cloak" and "Dagger" will be taking us.

D&D 5E (2014) The Joy of Wild Sorcery - Post your amazing surge stories here!

These tales fill me with joy, as in two weeks I'll be rolling a Wild Sorcerer and dropping The Havoc on an unsuspecting campaign.

    D&D 5E (2014) Running away on intimidation

It's dramatic and "Hollywood" to shoot at the feet of someone running away in order to get them to stop. I like it. If I were a PC in group B and I had no other options for escape, I'd stop.

D&D 5E (2014) Future format of books that mimic SCAG: Will you buy them?

I haven't decided on SCAG, simply because I haven't yet been able to have a close look. If I like what I see, I'll get it. Same applies to all other products down the line. I have nothing whatsoever against the format so I voted Yes.

D&D 5E (2014) How badly did Sword Coast Legends damage the brand?

Not one bit. God forbid they want to get the best return possible from thousands of man-hours of work.

D&D 5E (2014) DM's: what do you do with players who want to switch characters?

Agree with others here: he's not having fun, allow him to switch, don't penalize, just come in at the lowest level of the party. Absolutely not. This incentivizes switching into classes that would benefit the most from the items he'd already accumulated.

    I gotta agree. That's a silly oversight.

    D&D 5E (2014) Traps and DCs

But what's your starting point? What differentiates a "good" trap (one that's difficult to find and good at its job) from a "bad" trap (botched, obvious, easy to avoid) if you build you DC's from player narrative?

D&D 5E (2014) The story got out of hand need advice

If your players understand the problem, and they're on-board with a reset, go with it. Bring the current campaign to a head with something insane and memorable!

D&D 5E (2014) New DM: Lost Mines question and Passive Perception?

Welcome to the board! I don't have the text with me right now but I do recall the first chapter or two making a pig's ear of what Perception means in 5E and how it works. 1. You imply the goblins saw the elf before he stealthed out of sight and went up the embankment. If so, they're aware of...
