WotC Third party, DNDBeyond and potential bad side effects.

To me, SlyFlourish's argument boils down to "DNDB is so popular that it will, or perhaps already has, become exclusionary". For me, as a DM, that's already true. I won't use a source that isn't on DNDB. It's a great tool, despite its flaws. In that sense WotC's plan has worked. (Out of...

D&D General What if High Level Was Only in a Supplement

And yet I was using it in the literal sense in my reply.

D&D General What if High Level Was Only in a Supplement

"No-one plays high level" is not a truism from my point of view. I've had multiple campaigns in, if you like, the third tier of the game. Some more successful than others. I wouldn't want a return to the game being split like you suggest. Just give me the game! Decide on the power and...

D&D General How do you like your dungeons?

Nice poll! I like a focused, highly-themed dungeon with a goal and a final challenge/boss monster tied into that theme. Bonus points for dungeon elements that assist in achieving that final goal/defeating that monster/scuppering its plans.

D&D 5E (2014) The Audience - Do you feel like you're the target audience?

I've purchased big chunks of every edition of D&D all the way back to AD&D, as a teenager with a tiny crumb of disposable income, all the way through into my sixth decade when I could probably purchase every release, if I wanted, but I tend to select only that material which will find use at my...

    D&D 5E (2014) How much money is D&D 5e actually making?

I have a shelf full of 5E books. Not all, but most, and some with the more expensive covers. On a table of five, we had, I think, four PHB's until the end of lockdown, but since then half my table has begun exploring DM'ing for various friends and family, and as a consequence they've bought a...

D&D General Nolzur creates inclusive miniatures, people can't handle it.

Great stuff, Wizkids, and we should all take note of whose mask is slipping in the reactions.

D&D General How do you know an adventure is "good" just from reading it?

If I'm standing in FLGS and perusing an adventure, the criteria that will make me purchase the book are laughingly superficial: Thematic art, especially of NPC's. They are the most important part of the adventure for me. Clear maps at all scales. The adventure locale should have one of the...

Critical Role Slate feature on Matt Mercer

Switch entirely to digital, produce one book a year in its most profitable genre, and focus on merch and tie-in's for secondary income? I'm sure the community would be right behind them!

WotC WotC: 'Artists Must Refrain From Using AI Art Generation'

I'm surprised by the proportion of commenters who seem okay with AI replacing human-generated art. Certainly the OGL outrage earlier this year suggested that we, as a community, like to project that we care about the little guy, about people's livelihoods, and the value of independent creators...

D&D 5E (2014) 5E Lifetime Sales in North American Big Box Stores Revealed

Nah, that's a dodgy assumption. For a while, locally, I didn't have a FLGS, so I bought books from the local Waterstones.

D&D Movie/TV Should the D&D Movie Been Serious or Not Called D&D?

I wouldn't have been impressed by a blood-and-incest take on D&D. It doesn't reflect my experience with the game and would have done nothing for the brand. I might have enjoyed it, but I would have been compelled to tell anyone who wanted to listen that it was not D&D and you shouldn't be...

D&D General So what is high level play like?

My group is at 16th-level right now. This is the closing stage of a multi-year campaign with PC character arcs all coming to fruition, so mechanical challenges are secondary to character/narrative reckonings. That's where most of my attention goes. Mechanically, there's good and bad. Good...

D&D 5E (2014) Ruling Question on Shapechanger & Hold Person

By RAW I would rule that the spell worked. However, having the spell fail, perhaps coupled with some judicious eyebrow waggling or side-eye from the DM, would be one of those potentially cool player discovery moments that we should always look for as DM's. So I voted 'Other'.

D&D Movie/TV Do you think the D&D Movie will be good?

Yes, the trailer has all the signs of high quality source material. A bunch of us nerds will be seeing it together.
