Mike Mearls' D&D AMA Summary: Rangers, Initiative, WotC Staff Levels, Fave Pizza

Thanks for doing this! Very candid stuff from Mearls there, good to see.

    D&D 5E (2014) OotA: Society of Brilliance

The Society is one of my favourite little corners of OotA. They will feature heavily later-on in the campaign.

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-stealth surprise

Are the guards bad at their job? Have they been told the PC's are friendly? Is the barbarian fidgety? Is he complaining and making trouble? Did he do anything to disguise his aggression? Did he simply reach for his great-axe and start attacking? Answers to any of these will help you with your...

    D&D 5E (2014) DM not roleplaying much

Just talk to your DM! It's clear that any attempt to "solve" this problem in-game (which I rarely if ever advocate) will run into a wall of silent, stand-offish NPC's, and you'll all just get even more annoyed with each-other. "Hey, DM! We really enjoy the roleplaying side of D&D but you don't...

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Twitter Poll: "The druid gets one of the following: Spellcasting | Shapeshifting | Animal companions. Choose."

5E druid is a *wonderful* class. Perhaps slightly OP, perhaps a bit muddled with super-powerful spells available alongside shape-shifting, but incredibly fun, and way superior to the overly-constrained 4E version. It's probably the class I've had the best time with. If there is any concern about...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you time your players in combat?

No, I don't do that, but if I was DM'ing random tables of strangers every week a-la AL, I might consider it. This is not to say I don't urge people along or outright demand an action if they're taking their time, especially in situations where carefully ratcheted tension is bleeding away.

D&D 5E (2014) How long is your average session?

3+ hours every Thursday night, 4 hours every month or so on Skype, and a whole weekend around the table every 2-3 months!

D&D 5E (2014) Expedition to the Demonweb Pits as a sequel to Out of the Abyss?

My OotA campaign has gone very, very homebrew, but Lolth is still the force behind the curtain, so I might consider this myself!

    D&D 5E (2014) 'Magic' down and 'D&D' up. Hasbro notes D&D

I'm afraid that Critical Role demonstrates none of these advantages. They're playing at very high level, fights last for hours, and they do use mini's! Would it be worse with Pathfinder? Debatable, but certainly more impenetrable for inexperienced viewers.

D&D 5E (2014) On Past Tenses and Paladins

I like smat. Smat. I just like saying it. Smat. Puts a smile on my face. My actual choice is "smote".

[UPDATED!] D&D Beyond: An Official D&D Digital Toolset & Character Builder

IIRC the original guidelines did say something about "Create, don't copy."

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiple personalities PC

An Angelus type? You potentially have a guy who wants to play an evil PC with impunity ("It wasn't me! It was the other guy!"), so watch out for that if it hasn't already occurred to you. Otherwise, sure, roll at the end of a Long Rest. Or, decide on the trigger, and keep it to yourself. Do not...

D&D 5E (2014) How seriously do you take your D&D?

D&D is a unique route to fun. A table full of friends, crying from laughter at some random quip, or leaning in to see if their comrade fails his next Death Save, it's all the same to me. I get immense pleasure from both providing that table, and sitting at it. And this is to say nothing of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse campaign recaps

Fantastic documents! Would you mind, and I hope I haven't asked this before, describing your process for getting the battlemats printed?

    D&D 5E (2014) DM Bloggers

I maintain a journal in an informal narrative style which is shared with the players. When I have enough in the bank, and if they're up for it, I'll post it to my RPG blog.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use all of the P.C. races and classes from the PHB?

I allow evrything, and jump with both feet into whatever crazy my players like to throw at the table. The only time I put absolute restrictions on the game is when there are options which would simply break the campaign (no Underdark as favoured terrain in Out of the Abyss, for example). To be...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do we need saving throws?

This is exactly how I adjudicate when a saving throw is required vs. an ability check. Saving throws are autonomic, reflexive, and free. I don't really care about the player agency part of it (and neither does anyone I've DM'd, to my knowledge). All that being said, if a player really did not...
