D&D 5E (2014) Magic Items found during the game: How do you handle the "oh look, this random dungeon just happens to have that sword my character wanted."

4E really supported the idea of PC's "destined" to find the items that would make them the most powerful, since PC's were assumed to be chosen ones, a cut above the hoi-polloi. In that respect, I never had a problem with wish lists. The convergence of magic on a PC was simply a reflection of...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

Yeah, that number smacked me in the face a bit as well.

D&D 5E (2014) What to do with players that always roll well

Been doing it for thirty years and it's a VERY hard habit to break. We do however have additional standing rules for stat generation (2 sets of 4d6 drop lowest, choose which set you want).

    Dungeon Raiders: The Wolf's Den

Rejik lingers in the corridor outside, keeping one eye on the action in the room, alert for sudden dangers.

    D&D 5E (2014) Valuable Stuff

I like handing out random art items and jewelry as well as raw GP, and always try and come up with some off-the-cuff detail. A ring with a missing gem or part of the band cut out, a beautiful painting with someone's face painted over, a silk scarf with heraldry no-one has seen for a thousand...

D&D 5E (2014) What to do with players that always roll well

I'm not sure buoyancy is an indication of likely bias at the table, but an interesting test nonetheless!

D&D 5E (2014) What to do with players that always roll well

Yup, I always observe stat rolls. If I didn't see it, it didn't happen. I mostly rely on other players to police the general run of things at the table.

Well tbh that sounds like only one thing. :(

    D&D 5E (2014) Jousting

Great post! Don't forget that shattering your lance on the opponent's shield was actually a win-condition of sorts for the attacking rider, so you may want to factor that in to the mechanics somehow. Perhaps the jouster receives an inspiration die on his next attack, or doesn't consider a...

D&D 5E (2014) What to do with players that always roll well

This is at the table, or on-line? If you're confident he isn't cheating, one option is to modify the game to play at a difficulty level both you and your players are happy with. Lucky streaks on the d20 even out (of course), but lucky streaks resulting in very high Hit Point PC's can affect the...

    D&D 5E (2014) New Session Prep Method

This is terrific. I particularly agree with putting Goals and Quests at the very top of the page. If I could make that section flash in neon on a sheet of A4 I would. It's so important to keep a free-flowing exploration session on-track, and as a DM I want to reflect those goals in as much of...

D&D 5E (2014) Friendly NPCs and death saves

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighting Truly Massive Creatures...

Truly enormous creatures are potential battle arenas unto themselves: every part of the creature can be an encounter or (in 4E parlance) a skill challenge. Imagine the war-oliphaunts at the Pelennor Fields in Peter Jackson's RotK. Sure, Legolas is a super-hero and takes one out himself, but...

    Psionics Coming Soon To D&D?

I enjoy psionics but I'm really struggling to justify the idea that they need a whole new system. They're not different or interesting enough to deserve such treatment, IMO. In the 3E days I would simply say, live and let live, it's no skin off my nose if psionics gets its own book...but these...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking with a warhorse

That picture reminds me of the time I DM'd a minotaur PC who grappled a charging horse, picked it up, and threw at its now prone rider, killing him instantly. Many high-fives were exchanged around the table that day. I ruled the horse survived with only minor PTSD.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking with a warhorse

I guess we're just working from different references. :) Trampling, for sure, and I've allowed it, although always at the expense of the rider's action. Anything more than that just looks odd in my mind's eye, with a mundane mount at least. Now, a dragon, or a gryffon, or something fantastic...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking with a warhorse

Why do you feel an unintelligent mount should be able to attack? A horse is rearing with its hooves and chomping down with its teeth?

    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking with a warhorse

I would allow (and have allowed) a mounted PC to run someone down, but he used his action to do so. Other than that, you want the benefit, you spend the feat.
