D&D General Multiclassing Shouldn't be Treated as the Default

IMO part of the perceived problem with Multi-classing is that people often use it for "dipping to get cool new powers" - more meta-gaming than role-playing. As a thought experiment, if Multiclassing rules included a clause like "all levels taken in a class must be taken consecutively" (i.e...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Occasionally you'd be on an adventure "on the clock" and would have to figure out how much you can heal, but in my experience the above was more or less correct. Actually, now that I think about it, the above sounds more or less like "taking a long rest" under the current rules. The only...

D&D General Multiclassing Shouldn't be Treated as the Default

Subclasses to me have always felt a bit like 3e prestige classes. Which is probably why I am confused as to why people want to mix them with multiclassing. It feels like they are already kind of multiclassing into their subclass.

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

I believe it was Groucho Marx who said something to the effect of “I am not interested in being part of any association that would be willing to accept me as a member.” If being on ENWorld makes me a part of “D&D’s greatest” count me out. I’m just me.

Ideas for Physical Setup of a West Marches Campaign

I'm hoping to get a West Marches style campaign going locally and have found some interesting ideas out there that I'm going to compile here for feedback (and to hopefully hear others' suggestions). This is NOT about play style, or DM prep, but instead how to "get people invested" in the...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Since I'm someone who is happy to steal from multiple sources, when I find a rule that does the job, I steal it for my games. If you prefer to have an impactful downside for hitting 0 hp, I would advocate stealing the "Wounded" rule from PF2E to put some downside to going to zero, at least as a...

D&D 5E (2024) Should Goodberry get improve like Cure and Healing word?

While you did not call me out by name, you implied I was committing the logical fallacy of appeal to authority in your previous post ("using simulation and v-tude as to gussy up preferences with an appearance of authority") - I did not express a general preference one way or the other in my...

D&D 5E (2024) Should Goodberry get improve like Cure and Healing word?

I think this is the correct answer. Here at ENWorld, I think we skew both older than the average TTRPGer and skew more towards DMs than players. Also note that D&D has become more and more combat-focused over the years. Exploration, Survival, Dominions, all of these things are less and less...

D&D General Hot Take: Dungeon Exploration Requires Light Rules To Be Fun

I had a much wordier post before I realized it could be simplified a lot, this is the simplified version. There are two "phases" to most games - the "between the sessions" phase (usually during level up and/or daily spell preparation) wherein the players are choosing from which among "all...

OSR What's the best introductory BX/OSR scenario for new players and DMs?

Going to assume you meant "B11 - Welcome to the World's Smallest Orc Hole" since you seem to speak highly of B10 - Night's Dark Terror elsewhere. ;)

OSR What's the best introductory BX/OSR scenario for new players and DMs?

This is certainly a fair criticism, though I would argue that any adventure that attempts to give a deep example of each of combat encounters, realistic ecology, large swathes of exploration content, chances to engage in RP and intrigue, etc. will contain sufficient material as to disqualify it...

    OSR Best introductory BX/OSR scenarios

Interesting; while I certainly wouldn't nominate B11 in the list of "Best Modules Ever Written" I would posit that saying that a module has a "small scope" and relies somewhat on tropes ("Orcs in a Hole") actually refer to what makes it a good introductory module (emphasis on "introductory")...

OSR What's the best introductory BX/OSR scenario for new players and DMs?

Surprised no one has yet mentioned B11 - King's Festival. While it's not technically BX, it is BECMI, which is a very close cousin, and B11 actually does a pretty good job of walking a new DM through, you know, DM'ing in my opinion. Pages 3 through 9 are a DM tutorial with the following section...

Do any other old school gamers hate the term grognard?

This, though when I self-identify as a grognard, it’s usually because I am about to be at least mildly grumpy and threaten kids about remaining on my lawn. But then, I use it in a slightly self-deprecating but loving way, the way sailors might have a fondness for being called a salty sea dog by...

D&D General Alternate thought - rule of cool is bad for gaming

My understanding is the limit at 20d6 is intended to represent terminal velocity. Per What is Free Fall? A Quick Lesson in Physics | Head Rush Blog. this estimate is way too low as the human body reaches terminal velocity after falling about 1500 feet so damage should instead cap at 150d6. So I...

D&D General Alternate thought - rule of cool is bad for gaming

Assuming the dragon is on the ground and throws the PC 220 feet straight up vertically (since and angle of flight was not specified), the PC spends an equal amount of time going up and going down. Since d=1/2at^2, t = sqrt(2d/a). Plugging in 220 ft. for d and assuming earth gravity of 32 ft/s^2...

D&D General When did you leave D&D? Why? For what game? And what brought you back?

Let’s see.. Left BECMI and 1e to try new stuff. Talislanta, Rifts, Star Frontiers, GURPS, probably more stuff I can’t remember. Came back to BECMI and 1e. Stayed into 2e. Left for home brew mashups of White Wolf, d6 Star Wars, Cyberpunk, Palladium, other stuff. Started following some site named...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

Not all that related but I was in a FLGS recently with a banner above the game room door that read “How Deadly is YOUR DM?” and it had names and tally marks under each name on the banner. Asking the staff about it, they confirmed this was a real thing they tracked.
