D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

The computer game from Owlcat Games really improved this aspect of the story. The villain presents herself early on and keeps up just the kind of annoying monologue that makes you hate her. She does this in dreams, making her invulnerable and makes you the player unable to charge to your death...

D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

I find it hard to get the players to actually read and absorb the Players' Guides. And after the first scenario everyone was hyped for adventures in the cool city of Sasserine. I had warned everyone this was becoming a naval campaign, but if I recall, the planar episodes had not yet been...

BitD Hack - Military Campaign Progress

Thanks for the warning. Like the power rules earlier, this is not something I am going to do soon - quite a bit of work before that, and I don't master the regular downtime rules yet.

D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

I suspect the main reason late bosses don't even make cameo appearances repeatedly in a campaign is that the designer is afraid the PCs will charge the villain and either prematurely kill them or all die themselves.

D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

Except for Jade Regent, that I didn't play, all these examples are how it worked out in actual play.

BitD Hack - Military Campaign Progress

Continuing to delve into BitD. We gave up our trial run of Candela Obscura and are now on Princess World - Frontier Kingdoms session 2. But that's not what I am going to talk about. I had an idea for something I found hard to do in any other game that might work in BitD, and that is doing a...

D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

Candlekeep is discussed a lot earlier in the thread, and since I am currently playing it, I want to chime in. My campaign is a combination of Kobold Press' Old Margreve (a series of unconnected adventures in the forest of Old Margreve) and Candlekeep Mysteries. And both me and my player have...

D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

I see a lot of this, its the style most popular around here. I personally often GM bought adventures. But adventure paths often does not support their own story, or at least does not advertise themselves enough, making it hard to make suitable characters. My main experience is with Paizo...

D&D 5E (2014) Where's the Villain? and other musings. Why some published campaigns are great and some aren't (Spoiler alerts)

In my experience, if the DM focuses on keeping the PCs poor, this is the result. "Why should we help people who only seem to be out to rob us". The problem is that the opposite, too much wealth, is also destructive, making players either want to buy themselves magic items or, if unavailable...

Sketch of Generic Power Rules for Blades in the Dark

Looking at it now. Its not as wide-ranging as my power options, which I should maybe read to say that I am too wide-ranging. :) At a minimum it something to compare to.

Sketch of Generic Power Rules for Blades in the Dark

Yay! Thanks for commenting! And now, of course, I am gonna argue. :) I'm all for the flashback and work as a team rules, that's a big part of why I am looking at BitD. That, faster pacing, and less prep work which allows greater player freedom as its easier for the GM to improvise. What I am...

Answering a decade-old post, but I can't find any submission info on Patreon.

Sketch of Generic Power Rules for Blades in the Dark

I'm feeling really presumptuous now, working outside my experience. I've only played a few sessions of BitD, but I am considering it for my Greyhawk campaign as it moves into the baroque. My players are used to games like DnD where spells/powers play a very important feature, and I am...

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

Very much agree with this. I'd call this the squick principle - even if you personally hate it you should be able to see that it need not be objectively bad.

    Peregrine's Nest: Candela Obscura Review

I wasn't claiming you did :) I saw sort of defending myself and pointing out this was not my position either. We can set up games where these themes are handled, but that would then be the theme of the game and most certainly something to talk about at session zero.

    Peregrine's Nest: Candela Obscura Review

My point was more about women than men. SOME men explore the in-game consequences of gender, but in my (limited) experience, MOST women avoid them. The parallel to queer experience is that I guess queer people, like women, have enough of these problems RL and don't want to explore them in games...

Blades in the Dark Advice Please?

I picked up Blades in the Dark and at least skimmed it now. My immediate thought is "this is the rules SLA Industries should have been using". :) Almost everything from BitD is also in Princess World - Frontier Kingdoms - the one thing missing from memory is the Engagement Roll, which is a nice...

    Peregrine's Nest: Candela Obscura Review

I've seen this with female players. Males playing female characters often like to explore the consequences of their swap. Women playing female characters get that in real life and have no patience for it in a RPG.

Blades in the Dark Advice Please?

Wise words. Candela Obscura has removed most if not all the campaign elements. It also has 9 abilities, instead of 12. It can give play experience, but only in the action parts. I'm happy with that now, but later I may want the background elements too. Princess Kingdoms has a version of them.
