D&D General If A Noble holds 1 title per country in 2 neighbouring countries what can he do if those countries go to war?, after all no matter what he lose's

I am likely wrong; English is not my native language. This isn't something you can easily check in a dictionary, which I tried to do.

D&D 5E (2014) How were the "Sane Magic Item Prices" arrived at?

What I think makes these priced as they are is that they all give disadvantage on saves against the bard's spells that cause the Charmed condition, which is indeed very powerful and worth more than the spel-llike abilities the instruments give. IMC I have introduced much cheaper versions that...

D&D 5E (2014) How were the "Sane Magic Item Prices" arrived at?

5E is supposed to work without these static bonuses. Magic items are not supposed to be needed. :) But Sane Magic Item Prices (SMIP hereafter) does seem to assume you hand out static bonus items, as most pre-written scenarios do even at very low levels. The SMIP seem to follow the quadratic...

D&D General If A Noble holds 1 title per country in 2 neighbouring countries what can he do if those countries go to war?, after all no matter what he lose's

This is entirely possible in most fantasy worlds, that have a concept of humanitarianism similar to us. I do not think this would work in medieval Europe or most other historical periods - this kind of behavior is expected from women (and Christian clergy) but unmanly and would make him lose...

D&D General Let us share our Elves and Orcs

My ideas of fantasy races have varied over time, and are not consistent, but this is the story I am currently playing with. The races are intimately died into the story of creation, so I have to start from the beginning. I play in a version of the World of Greyhawk influenced both by the...

D&D General If A Noble holds 1 title per country in 2 neighbouring countries what can he do if those countries go to war?, after all no matter what he lose's

Often feudal obligations were very specific. Say a particular noble has feudal obligations to two kings, obliged to send 30 infantry to one king and 5 knights to another, he could satisfy both obligations like this.

    D&D 5E (2014) Anticlimactic Boss Fights

To be honest, it sounds like you had a fun session. Anticlimax in RPGs is much more tolerable, even satisfying, than it is in most other media. What IS a problem is if this happens every time.

I am presently playing the Grandmother's Fire scenario from Kobpld Press' Old Margrave. The scenario begins with what appears to be a random encounter. We are not yet at that point - the player's have researched an area of interest, and are having a chance encounter along the way. When they get...

D&D 5E (2014) Artificers, Vehicles, and Vehicle Infusions

Edit: Looking at the Aeronaut artificer thread, this might or might not work better as several different subclasses for different kinds of vehicles.

D&D 5E (2014) Artificers, Vehicles, and Vehicle Infusions

I wrote a sketch for a Conveyor subclass of the artificer, but it is a cluttered mess and needs several design passes. https://hastur.net/action/wiki/Conveyor_(5A)

D&D General If A Noble holds 1 title per country in 2 neighbouring countries what can he do if those countries go to war?, after all no matter what he lose's

This varied a lot, both by region and over time. In the dark ages, this was av everyday occurrence, and there really weren't any countries, what existed was dynastic holdings and dynastic families. Nobles were pretty free to choose sides and could expect little consequence for doing so. As the...

D&D 5E (2014) Nations and Cannons: The American Crisis for DND 5E

Oh, you are all talking about the Pomeranian, war, the main point of which was that Sweden lost much of the province of Pommern to Prussia! History can be a very subjective topic.

Level Up (A5E) The big difference between A5e and 5e?

Anna Meyer in her Greyhawk mapping project is putting Dark Sun as a subsetting in a small part of a huge, remote desert. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Nations and Cannons: The American Crisis for DND 5E

There is a Swedish RPG called Western, now in its fourth edition. The first edition came out in 1989. It is very spaghetti-western in its setting. I haven't played it much and I don't know much about the setting, but I think that if your references are 70s films, you are pretty close. Link is...

D&D 5E (2014) Tell me about your Artificer

In my Candlekeep Mysteries campaign, the PCs are members of Candlekeep, and the most scientifically minded one of them is a Battlesmith Artificer. A jack of all trades and master of none, the artificer is mainly a second line fighter with some pets. We're not playing up the gizmo aspect of the...

    On "Illusionism" (+)

Railroading can be used at different scales. For an extreme example, we ran a Marine Corps campaign where missions were ordered by HQ. There was NO player agency in the selection of adventures. But once on site, the mission was more or less a Big Dumb Object that the players could interact with...

    On "Illusionism" (+)

I concede this point, but the argument still holds - in the GM's world the Ringwraiths might have that ability and the PCs might not know.

    On "Illusionism" (+)

And for a storytelling DM like myself, this makes perfect sense. The Ringwraiths can sense the ring, so they home in on the PCs, forcing a confrontation. They have a weapon they are convinced can turn the ringbearer into their slave, so once they hit Frodo, further conflict is pointless and they...
