For those who have embraced new systems/games, what was the deciding factor?

I rarely go looking for new systems, I have them introduced to me by friends. Some of them stick to me, Feng Shui and most recently Blades in the Dark. I massively hack these systems and then return to my favorite setting in the World of Greyhawk. I'd say I am the one picking what systems we...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

I wish we could be satisfied with stating an opinion, such as about how the Help action works, without making it a debate. Debates belong in their own threads. Once you have said "I think X" in a thread not devoted to debate, there is not much point in saying it again, especially if you are...

    Underrated RPGs

I looked at this for my Crimson Skies back in the day. Had the aerial system been a little better, I would have used it.

    Dragonbane Post-Mortem

I played Dragonbane at a con (Well, I played Drakar & Demoner, in the original Swedish) and didn't even notice they removed Siz. :o

    Any AI Gamemasters Out There?

We usually played that kind of specialty groups. :)

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

I was trying to get around the advantages of darkvision, so no, that would lose the point. :o Realistically, I'm not sure how noticeable that difference would be. The real problem is when you see each other at great range, and suddenly there is a spot you can see way outside your darkvision...

    “Monstrous” NPCs

I use a variant of this. My setting is human dominating, and most contacts, patrons, and general NPCs are human. This is an informal advantage to playing a human; you have an easier time fitting in. Of course, when appropriate, I can use anything as an NPC, especially at higher levels when...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

One solution I tried to make light less of a hindrance was to say that creatures with darkvision could only tell if there was light by the fact that they could suddenly see colors - which would not be very apparent in a dungeon. But this solution never caught on with my players.

A favorite about 3E/Pathfinder darkness was how a Shadowdancer got invisble in darkness, even against creatures that could see in that darkness.

    Dragonbane Post-Mortem

Some BRP-derived gaes like Stormbringer had Hp = Con, but then gave bonuses for size. In effect this was Con + Siz -12 (as long as your Siz was 12 or higher).

    Dragonbane Post-Mortem

Reminds me how Pendragon 1E had Hp = Siz + Con and damage scaled appropriately to match. Pendragon was such a step up from BRP IMHO.

Such lights still put you at a disadvantage trying to sneak up on others, which to me is the core of this thread. Common darkvision among monster disables scouting using Stealth.

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

In 5E they merged Darkvision and Low-Light Vision. Initially I hated this, but now I think it was actually a good idea. Low-Light Vision was basically unlimited in range outdoors (if you looked up the definition). In our Skull & Shackles game, the elves and gnomes ruled the night where the...

Blades in the Dark Advice Please?

When I type "Enworld" in my browser, this is the page it takes me too, with the depressing mod message. I may have to make a bookmark.

Its mandatory if it exists. If you have to factor in opponents with darkvision, and you don't have darkvision, that makes you useless as a scout. But if nobody has darkvision, the floor is level again and everybody can scout.

pulpy, Cthulhu, Crimson Skies, Feng-Shui... Actually I am happy if all these terms did not annoy. Perhaps Buzzword is the wrong term here, more like group-speak.

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Darkvision is mandatory for certain roles, primarily for scouting but also for stealth in general. As this is a part of the game both I and my players enjoy. I am making darkvision much less common in my next campaign; the goblins will now be using torches and campfires just like everybody else.
