AD&D 1E How do you play an illusionist?

I did play a dual-classed illusionist/assassin in my worst power-gaming days. I focused mainly on invisibility, blur, mirror image and the like, but I also did illusions, usually to fake other spells. Illusory Wall of Stone, illusory Fireball, illusory whatever spell I needed. Thinking back on...

    Which Greyhawk in D&D 2024

To be honest, I'm not super-happy for Greyhawk to be given the "official setting" treatment. I was pretty happy with it as abandonware I could do what I want with and not risk having it superseded later.

    Which Greyhawk in D&D 2024

I think my game is now in the 1680s. The Greyhawk Wars are history, Nyrond is an emerging superpower, the north part of the old Great Kingdom is a puritanical Pholtus-dominated republic of Andorian borrowed from Pathfinder and northern Furyondy might be moving into Fairy soonish. Everyone ought...

    Which is of course A-ok!

Any Supers Game that feels Super?

Over midsummer I was with friends and the DnD movie was playing in the background. It made me realize how unlike the action in that movie is a typical DnD game. There are no battle lines in the movie, no delivering attack sequences, actually very few attacks at all. Instead there are stunts...

Any Supers Game that feels Super?

This is all true, and also the reason I don't really like the arrowverse. To each their own.

Blades in the Dark (& hacks) - Replacing Effect Dice

So, I tried this now in a Princess World game. Due to how the kingdom building works in that game, our tier 2 kingdom faced tier 0 (zero) adversaries. In ordinary BitD style, this would add two effect levels to every action, which means anything but a failure is likely to overrun the opposition...

Blades in the Dark (& hacks) - Replacing Effect Dice

I think this would mostly change the game when acting against higher-tier opposition, which is very common. PCs have several advantages that makes acting against higher tiers (and thus at an effect disadvantage) very doable in campaign play. Vs equal and lower tier opponents you get extra dice...

Any Supers Game that feels Super?

I really like this method of providing motivation. What drives the PCs is not fear of their own death, it is fear of bad consequences for the setting and the NPCs they care about. I do this a lot.

Blades in the Dark (& hacks) - Replacing Effect Dice

This happens, and we sometimes pay for the attempt. This usually happens when rolling lots of dice, so the chance of a 6 are great. This is especially true when making group checks, which especially happens on a stealthy approach which we commonly use. Its really only Harm that are a danger, as...

Any Supers Game that feels Super?

I bought Aberrant and the others mostly for the setting material to read.

White Wolf made the Aberrant system, along with companion games set in earlier and later eras. I have the d20 port of these, but not the originals. Any opinions on these?

Blades in the Dark (& hacks) - Replacing Effect Dice

Thanks for the reply. Yes to all your questions/assumptions. I've been playing BitD and Princess World - Frontier Kingdoms to the point where I think I grok the mechanics and are considering hacking them. I do understand how demanding a certain effect for a desired result during the negotiations...

Blades in the Dark (& hacks) - Replacing Effect Dice

I might try this out on my Princess Kingdoms game - its already quite a bit different from BitD canon.

Any Supers Game that feels Super?

You manage to get HERO to be fast and furious? I'm impressed. Every system works better once you know it well. We tried HERO, but we never got to the point where it flowed for us. Hero has the scaling where it is possible to make a super that can blow up a planet because cost lis linear while...

    D&D General Diabetes in dnd

These things are much easier to balance in more freeform games. In a game like DnD it makes sense to have specific rules-defined abilitets and disabilities. In a freeform game it just becomes a part of the conversation. A blind character's player can claim to be better in a certain situation...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running 5e at high Levels

This is the main reason I like Blades in the Dark so much. I always wanted planning to be retroactive, but having actual rules support for it really helps.

Rounds must be fast if a scene can be up to 8 rounds long. Or do most actions end sooner?
