    Ranger/ Beast Master forgotten companions

I figure mounts are being reserved for paladins, to be introduced in Divine Power. Tricky, though, because you don't want a major class feature that is awkward in a dungeon.

    Define some genres

A couple of lessons I've learned about RPG genres: I think you can cross anything with H.P. Lovecraft, and I think you can cross anything with "tournament fighter." But I've never been 100% convinced of the viability of crossing tournament fighter with Lovecraft. Maybe start with some 1920s...

    Define some genres

I've been thinking a little bit about the "tweenpulp" genre and how it hasn't been represented in RPGs. I'm speaking of action/adventure with kids [say, ten to seventeen] as the heroes. Johnny Quest is the main model, but I'd throw in Goonies and Spy Kids and the Hardy Boys and the Young Indiana...

    Any ideas for a 4th Edition fighter / thief / magic-user?

Old-school, baby. Half-elf, most likely. Tradition. I'm leaning toward Swordmage . . . Sneak of Shadows and Ritual Magic and Skill Training: Stealth, and you pretty much have the archetype covered. Not sure what to do for an paragon path, though . . . Any other ideas?

Master of Bears: the missing animal companion paragon paths

So Martial Power has some dandy stuff for rangers and their animal companions, including specific paragon paths for cat-rangers and wolf-rangers. But what about boar-rangers? Doesn't that merit a paragon path? Or spider-rangers? C'mon, you've bonded with a 100-pound near-sentient spider . ...

Why are we all goblin sharpshoters level 2? What does it mean?

Now I must post and see my level. Second level. Fair enough.

    PHBII Classes Confirmed

Hmm . . . or pair up Elemental / Psionic for Dark Sun, and then do Ki / Shadow for Oriental Adventures.

PHB II class roster all but confirmed?

Maybe it works like the animal companion in Martial Power. Your alternate form is defined as a broad category --- bear, cat, lizard, raptor --- and that choice affects some of your powers. You can gain additional forms as you advance in level, but there are also benefits to specializing. I'd...

So I have the Martial Powers book.

I'd bet a nickel that they are saving mounts for the paladins.

So I have the Martial Powers book.

From the previews, it looks like your choices are always going to be bear, boar, cat, lizard, raptor, serpent, spider, or wolf. You might describe your "wolf" as a regular wolf, a dire wolf, a fairy hound, a hyena, or whatever, but the stats remain the same and improve as the ranger goes up...

So I have the Martial Powers book.

Any paragon paths that particularly catch your eye?

The Force Unleashed has arrived . . .

Good question. The WOTC thread suggests that these new "Unleashed" feats have formidable mojo indeed, but they burn Destiny Points. Literally chopping an AT-AT in half is a rather over-the-top manner of visualizing vehicle vs. Jedi combat, but I'd imagine a 20th level Jedi can tear through...

The Force Unleashed has arrived . . .

I got my copy of Star Wars Force Unleashed Campaign Guide - Wizards Community Chapter 1: Species Aleena Caamasi Felucian Gran Nosaurian Talz Togorian Toguta Whiphid Yarkora (Also later in the book Noghri & Chiss) Chapter 2: Heroic Traits Jedi Consular Talent Tree Cleanse Mind Force of Will...

    Aasimar are now . . . Devas.

Personally, I wish WotC would start emphasizing races that have the personality traits of hardworking thirtysomething nerds with families and adult responsibilities. Maybe some kind of dwarf, but instead of drinking mead and killing orcs, they worry about their aging parents and mortgage...

    Aasimar are now . . . Devas.

The "point," of course, was to replace one idea with a better idea. Whether it worked or not remains to be seen, since we're probably only talking about a few lines in a book none of us have read yet. I'm not sure that the old-model aasimar really fit in the new cosmology, since angels have...

    Aasimar are now . . . Devas.

Maybe that's tied into the cycle of reincarnation, too --- you move up the hierarchy as you learn and evolve. So between the reincarnation and the name "deva" our aasimar suddenly seem rather Hindu in flavor. I like it. It brings a different cultural flavor to the game, and it's more...

    Aasimar are now . . . Devas.

From the Wizard's boards, re: the FR Player's Guide: "Official word: aasimars have been renamed as 'Devas.' In the Realms at least, they are perpetually reincarnated after they die." Yay! Player's Guide to the Realms has shipped.. Should have it monday or tuesday. - Page 3 - Wizards Community...

Edition Signature Settings (and a farewell to the Realms)

By the hammer of Thor, the first FR book has a street date of TODAY, and you've already concluded that it's "seemingly unpopular"? The Realms, as I understand it, will contain within it everything that's in your 4.0 PHB. Dragonborn, warlocks, slightly taller halflings, etc. Because the...

Call of Cthulhu Saga Edition ;)

Hey, this RPG design stuff is easy! I remember there was a d20 pulp project (which never saw daylight) that was going to have as its classes the Man of Mystery, the Man of Action, and the Man of Science. I always liked that. Can't quite make it work for the SAGA classes, though --- I guess...

Call of Cthulhu Saga Edition ;)

Glad to see you back at work, Gneech. Now what you need to do next is a Cliffhangers SAGA, for the Indiana Jones / Mummy type stuff. And the darn thing writes itself, you know. Tweak the skill list, use your Swords & Sorcery mechanics for the sorcery, drop the Jedi, and maybe rename a few...
