[UPDATED] Here's Mike Mearls' New D&D 5E Initiative System

I suggested this a few pages back... ... but it didn't garner any type of response. It's not a solution I'd personally ever want to go back to, but it did work.

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

There's a lot of space for creativity between "no recommended advice" and "run it exactly like this" in a published product. Experienced (or stubborn) DMs likely don't mind the lack of guidelines, but less experienced DMs will often appreciate some hand holding. Regardless of your comfort...

[UPDATED] Here's Mike Mearls' New D&D 5E Initiative System

I got around this problem in 3.x by giving ongoing spells/effects/conditions their own place in the initiative track. It's extra bookkeeping, but it does allow for shifting initiative scores through Delayed actions or rerolling every round.

D&D 5E (2014) Called Shots: Aiming at specific body parts rule and discussion.

While the classic "what's good for the goose" argument is always something that should be considered, it shouldn't be the definitive reason to not allow a PC to take advantage of a special ability or exceptional mechanic. If you page through the Monster Manual and other official books, plenty...

D&D 5E (2014) Called Shots: Aiming at specific body parts rule and discussion.

I don't think discrete penalties to hit vulnerable areas are a good fit in D&D if only because the combat system is already abstracting that very concept with Hit Points, Armor Class, attack rolls, and critical hits. Placing that system under a microscope usually results in exploitation if it's...

    D&D 5E (2014) When To Roll Persuasion?

Since I'm not a big proponent of the "X successes before Y failures" skill challenge model in social encounters, I tend to lean on social checks more for simple interactions with barebones NPCs or when the players start pushing buttons outside the lines I've internalized for key NPCs. They're...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

I could possibly get behind a new Might skill, but only if the DM bellows out "TEST YOUR MIGHT!" using the Mortal Kombat announcer voice before every Might check made by the PCs.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

Truthfully, the spell is a pile of nonsense under most interpretations. It requires a certain blind level of acceptance to function without reproach. The caster and three shifting images are clustered into 5 square feet. Why can't a single attack easily hit multiple targets? If your table is...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

Fair enough. I try to stick with RAI unless there's a glaring balance issue, but both of your house rules in respect to Mirror Image's interaction with spells are consistent with your logic.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

So I assume you allow AoE effects to hit and destroy all the images since they would all be valid targets?

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

Thankfully, Magic Missile doesn't bother with a d20 since it's not an attack (in the D&D d20 roll-to-hit sense of the word). I don't understand the false equivalency being peddled. Magic Missile isn't an attack. It doesn't require a spell attack roll. It can't miss (The fighter cries...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

That's a vague area within the system and it's hardly unique to the Magic Missile spell. Plenty of spells (e.g Hold Person) require a creature as a valid target, so when a player targets an illusion, the DM must decide how to adjudicate the result by considering the following questions: Does...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

So you're not really upset by the ruling, just the style and medium in which it was delivered?

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

Well, shenanigans have been officially called. Guess that settles it. Oh, and Jeremy can amend that resume again and add "Most Ridiculous Ruling Ever" to his list of professional accomplishments!

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

It's not technically occuring at the same time. You're not required to use an action to resist an opposed roll which is essentialy the role of a Passive Perception score when an opponent or object is hidden. A character can make multiple attempts at the same task unless the DM dictates the...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

Crawford should amend his resume, replacing "Lead Rules Designer for Dungeons & Dragons" with "Dungeons & Dragons -- Random Developer" so it accurately reflects his role. Wouldn't want to mislead anyone!

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

He'd probably tell you that variant basically already exists ("Players Make All Rolls") but your number is off. An attacker would need a +19 attack bonus to avoid a chance of missing an AC 20 opponent. http://media.wizards.com/2015/downloads/dnd/UA5_VariantRules.pdf Silliness aside, I echo...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

Given that Magic Missile functions like a special AoE spell (one damage roll for all missiles), it's non-interaction with Mirror Image falls in line with other AoE damage.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Matter Of Initiative

Initiative is an ability check. You can adjudicate it like any other check as long as you're fair and consistent.
