    Cantrip Auto-Scaling - A 5e Critique

I once saw my group take down a Young Red Dragon with a sleep spell. He had been flying and breath-dive-bombing them, and they had managed to knock him down to about 60 hit points. In desperation, the party wizard readied a level 3 sleep spell for the next pass, and rolled 60+ on 9d8. Dragon...

Trying to make 5e more oldish and want some people's opinions

Not sure where you might have seen it (Basic D&D, perhaps?) -- in 1st edition AD&D, there was a period of rest (4 to 12 hours, depending on max level of spells) where you could sleep OR have light activity (no fighting or exploring), followed by 15 minutes of prep per level of spell regained...

Skills used by players on other players.

I see what you're saying, and I can agree, it's a table issue first. It's not a "rules" or "fiat" issue unless you believe that the rules could be slightly better defined to help DMs understand the implications of this in the light of PvP at their table - and for anyone who doesn't think this is...

Skills used by players on other players.

The part of that argument "don't dump stat X if you want Y" really doesn't hold water where 5e is concerned. It's not like Pathfinder where the person who is completely unprepared has a +12 difference from the person who optimized, and you could have had a chance to improve your insight check...

    Joe Manganiello's birthday party

That is a man making the most of his D&D geekery. :)

    Cantrip Auto-Scaling - A 5e Critique

Add to this that Wizards have ALWAYS been a problem in captivity ever since 3rd edition. They don't lose uncast spells when knocked unconscious, and even has the spell mastery feat back then, which any wizard who properly prepped took one feat choice of, to have a couple of contingencies...

Trying to make 5e more oldish and want some people's opinions

I think this bears repeating -- if the players want to shift, there's obviously some things they like more, and it bears finding out what those things are specifically. fatdoomguy, unless you have discussed these changes with your players (you don't say in your post), I would run these by them...

Eberron D&D Adventurers League adventures - The Killing Blade

Congratulations! Always great to see more Eberron material. One day, I MIGHT get to run one...

Do We Really Need Half-Elves and Half-Orcs?

I humbly submit: https://www.connectsavannah.com/savannah/dont-eat-the-coelacanth/Content?oid=2136175 You KNOW if any cryptids were ever discovered as real, the first thing to happen is tons of bozos lining up to dine on one, no matter how sentient... :D Yetis? Mothmen? Grafton Monsters...

Do We Really Need Half-Elves and Half-Orcs?

Sounds like Dragonlance had some really powerful imagery for gnomes to get people hating them so much. Looks like they did their job TOO well, because so many people can't think gnome without immediately associating "tinkerer with gadgets"... ...I think Paizo's take on gnomes is pretty cool, a...

Who are the leaders of the main factions in 5th edition?

I think WotC might be intentionally vague, so that DMs can further develop their own leaders. I do know more fairly canonical information may be found at both the Forgotten Realms Wiki and at Candlekeep. However, it bears to keep in mind that Candlekeep tends to follow any writings of Mr. Ed...

Ridding D&D of All Races - Multiple Choice Poll

I vote to get rid of the humans -- we see enough of those :):):):)ers on the six o'clock news. :)

    Favorite Human Forgotten Realms Deity

Hey, nothing wrong with buying more than one lottery ticket. ;-) As a side note, I find it interesting that there's no love for Hoar or Talona - then again, neither ever really got much screen time in any of the novels or adventures, either...

Taking nominations for best RPG Podcasts of 2018!

If Actual Play RPG podcasts are permissible, then I really need to nominate the Glass Cannon Podcast. It has very polished production values, and it's the irrreverent mix of humor, friendship, and spontaneous rules-explanation moments, combined with a roughly 1 hour form factor, that really make...

    Favorite Human Forgotten Realms Deity

I've always had an affinity for Helm. I'm one of those weirdoes who loved playing Clerics, even back in the 1st edition AD&D days, and Helm always struck me as the quintessential cleric god (along with St. Cuthbert for Greyhawk.) There's something about the devotion to duty I've always admired...

Do We Really Need Half-Elves and Half-Orcs?

Re: the domination of the River/Simon/Alliance arc in Firefly — I just counted, and it was the “A” plot of only three of the 14 episodes (Serenity, Ariel, and Objects in Space). That’s not bad for spotlight sharing for two of the seven crew. A “last gnome” subplot would not be that hard to...

Campaign Settings and DM Strictures, the POLL

Agreed -- meeting in the middle is preferred; I'm also for DMs having final say for the sake of expediency. What I'm saying is that tons of custom crafting is a lot of extra work, and if you want to do that work it's well and good, but most of the time in my experience all that extra work goes...

Do We Really Need Half-Elves and Half-Orcs?

I can actually imagine MORE horror if one gnome had survived, via due to a ritual, or a magical stasis (or literally the Imprisonment or Temporal Stasis spells), to come out of stasis in Athas to find that they are literally the last of their kind. Like the Rip van Winkle/Captain...

Review Dragon Heist, Mad Mage, and Ravnica!

Yeah, my memory's a bit hazy, but I think the migration was accompanied by a fake flame war, also, on the old forums before Russ pulled the plug? :) Good times.

Campaign Settings and DM Strictures, the POLL

This is why I throw potlucks rather than theme parties. They're far cheaper for me to cater, and the only thing I have to watch out for is any signs of food poisoning. :) Analogy goes for my gaming, too. I always set the main meat course or two (this is my campaign, these are the basic rules and...
