D&D 5E (2014) Geas + Modify Memory = Do you know your Geas condition?

Yeah, what got me thinking about it is, "what's the difference between, 'never understood what you are saying,' and 'never heard you say it in the first place?' " Recognition of the command sounds like it's key to the magic of the spell.

Have you ever let your ego creep into your character? Did it turn ugly, or did you manage to check yourself?

Those are some of my favorite moments as a player - when you and another player are in on the dynamic and it just works. I once met another player at Gencon, first time we had ever spoken, where I played the Greyhawk character Robilar and she played Quij, Robilar's *ahem* faithful orc...

D&D 5E (2014) Geas + Modify Memory = Do you know your Geas condition?

RAW: Sounds like it wouldn't matter. They are affected by the Geas, they take the damage. RAI: Reading the spell more carefully, note that if a creature "does not understand" the spellcaster (know their language), the spell has no effect. This sounds like the target needs to KNOW that they are...

Have you ever let your ego creep into your character? Did it turn ugly, or did you manage to check yourself?

I don't know if this is in similar vein or not, but I used to play with a guy who for some reason, consciously or not, decided to "one-up" every PC I played by playing a PC with the same party role, but with lots of rules-tweaking to make the PC better. It was kind of obvious after a while: (1)...

    On the Dodge Action

Like many other things, dodge is situationally the right call. It is to me most often used when you don't have any effective recourse against a foe for a given round, either because that foe is unattackable for some reason or you are in a terrible position and need to get into better position...

How do you stat out rulers such as kings and queens in your games?

Add to that Equestrian, Auto Mechanic (roughly Tech Level 7 in GURPS speak), and Certified Lunatic Wartime Driver. ;-)

Paizo Update: City Outside Time; Cradle of Night; Faiths of Golarion; Penumbra Protocol

Ben Reece -- you, sir, I like the cut of your jib. :D Excellent runthrough, much appreciated.

    More Details About RPGSports Emerge

And yet, here we are, "No True Scotsman"-ing our way through this very circumstance, people playing an RPG in a way different from what others think it SHOULD be played, because "it can't be done and still be called that thing." People used to play the old RPGA for points, and still roleplayed...

Dragon Reflections #16 – Gygax Fights Back!

So Gary described 5th Editions’ three pillars (combat, social interaction/role play, and exploration) as early as 1978.

    Wizard's Spell Book Allocation

Yeah, don't be afraid to hand out a lot of the exact same spells the wizard already has, or as what is in a given wizard NPCs entry. In reality you're going to find only one to two different spells each time an enemy wizard is defeated, if that many.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sages

This would also be handy for a conversion of UK4 When a Star Falls. Thanks!

The first A1 "Slave Pits of the Undercity" is still an EXCELLENT module to run at cons, if you just take the 'tournament only' parts and use them, which I've done before a couple of times (once in 4th edition, once in 5th edition). It's just the right length for a four hour session and if you...

D&D 5E (2014) [Forgotten Realms] The Wall of the Faithless

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alatrism Gods are not worshipped, because of various reasons (not considered worthy, won't affect anything, etc.) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misotheism "Direct Hatred of the gods." Atheism in most D&D worlds is definitely not a correct term - though it...

D&D 5E (2014) Art and Arcana: A visual History just arrived!

I'm impressed somebody didn't get sued back in the day. ;-) Then again, D&D wasn't on anyone's radar back then! I swear, I used to trace art like that back when I was a kid! For that last "swordsman" image, they didn't even change the positioning of the index finder that was on the trigger...

Delving into Dungeon in a Box

Consider some long-time gamers have clamored for box sets to return, over the past few years they HAVE BEEN -- just as premium products. :)

Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?

Actually, it says "for the first time on a turn" -- meaning they can move back in on their next turn, and it triggers again. It doesn't say "the first time, " it says "the first time on a turn." So, for 1 minute, a group could have some figure-skating-waltz-eight-style line that just keeps...

On one hand, BotNS was a quilty pleasure for me as a young kid. I got to see all my favorite actors doing stuff totally outside what I was used to seeing. On the other hand, this is nothing like BotNS, because that involved... y'know... activity. ;-)

Delving into Dungeon in a Box

A yearly subscription to this, including shipping, in the U.S. looks to be maybe only two or three dollars or higher than a Paizo Adventure Path (my last subscription from Paizo was about $27.00/month with shipping, and this would be about $30 to me). On the plus side, you can quit a Paizo...

    More Details About RPGSports Emerge

I’ll likely watch and support mainly to encourage more varied endeavors. Quite a few people ten years ago decried that there was and would never be any interest in watching people play RPGs - and that things like the Penny Arcade crew playing D&D on podcasts was silly. Now there are live shows...

Worlds of Design: What Makes an RPG a Tabletop Hobby RPG?

Sounds like the best plan then is to stick to the simplest definition possible - a genre of game in which one plays a role, usually in conjunction with other players. Or something like that. Everything else that’s been described are often but not always included in role playing games. There’s...
