Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Novices reading the rules need to be warned what to look for, especially since many come to the hobby by reading a gift rulebook.

    Non-magical fantasy subways

those cables need to be metal due to the stretchyness of plant fiber rope (and modern polymer rope, too)

    Non-magical fantasy subways

The first underground trains were in mines... usually drawn by equines. A system with vent-shafts was used for the first steam trains... medieval tech could have done steam trains, but didn't — pistons would be quite bespoke, and a steam variation of a water-wheel could have been used...

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

In writing rules, one should account for the expected authority dynamics. Including the common enough «bleep»-head dynamics.

    GM fiat - an illustration

No, it's not. it's the default operation of traditional play. Is that door locked? Either the GM invokes a rule (either game or module specific) (perhaps the module says it's locked, or there's a roll specified), or the GM decides. That's a routine base level fiat decision. The average session...

    GM fiat - an illustration

It is in doubt until... Someone invokes a mechanical resolution the GM makes a decision by fiat Fiat resolution is ending doubt by personal choice of the individual with the authority to use their own judgement rather than predefined mechanics.

Minis in a Starter Set? Preferences?

To be honest, I'm the type that prefers color pogs instead of standees... But I'd go standees in color before 3d printed minis.

    GMing without an inner monologue.

One other thought... Someone mentioned animal intelligence as "like ours, but littler." I was on the fence for years about Koko the gorilla and her signing. Then I saw very similar signing from my nephews (who are CODAs)... once I learned ASL, I found it fairly easy to understand Koko's signs...

    GMing without an inner monologue.

I have a rich inner monologue, sometimes my brain dissociates the character and I just ask them internally. More often, it's more like just letting me channel the character. Any major recurrent character has a dissociative aspect. Core me is always aware and in charge, but the dissociative bits...

Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

Some times. FFG Star Wars was the one that got bught, because the SWSE rules never got bought and I never ran d20 SW revised. But that's the exception. There are some I bought solely to read, tho', so those, if there's compelling reasons, yep.

And yet, it's common enough to be a standard archetype... It seems more common in two clades: convention games, and GM's taking out personals looking for players.

RPG Evolution: The Coming Social Collapse

It's better than a busy discord. I'm on several discords that have > 50 posts a day... and while I can scroll back, it's not worth it most of the time... so the few I am interested in get missed.

RPG Evolution: The Coming Social Collapse

In re Forums... Back in the dial-in BBS days (mid 80s to late 90s), most BBSs were single line or dual line (plus console access), served from the home, and the popular software was discussion boards that looked not too different from modern BBS internet, save for being all monospaced font text...

Final Fantasy XIV Getting an Official TTRPG

Given that it only actually has 6 levels... After the initial skim of CGen, I'm not sure I can run this thing with the players I've got who want to play it.

Ordered in December, Final Fantasy XIV Tabletop arrived to my post office friday, I found the slip on the 18th.(Technically, yesterday as I write this.) It's big. It's pretty. My eyes glazed over trying to skim the character gen.
