D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Yup, this is very group dependent of course. When I run games with my two sons I can do a full adventuring day in under two hours no problems as long as their characters are lower level. A full group of adults during our normal 3 hour session? Yeah, that's not going to work well with people...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Good point, if those encounters are very much staged like that then they can end up feeling more like a string of small fights than one big fight. I usually don't go in for that kind of detail but have had it happen a few times in recent campaigns, for example the PCs are ancient Greeks...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

I don't think either of you are really disagreeing just talking about different things. You're both talking about healing output per action, tactical healing. I'm more talking about healing output per day, strategic healing. You can set up an RPG in which characters are trash at one and great...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Thanks! For Healing Surges vs. tying healing to Hit Dice they're basically the same thing in terms of what they do to a game. The main difference is that 4e healing surges were REALLY generous. Yup and I don't really mind tactical healing getting buffed since healing in 5e was such a bad...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Yup, classic Combat as War vs. Combat as Sport. 5e was a messy compromise between them but 5.5e is moving towards Combat as Sport. The problem is that some of 5e's bones still have that compromise hardcoded into them pretty deep, beyond the ability of 5.5e to change without removing backwards...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

4e Healing surges were basically 5e Hit Dice on steroids. They each healed 1/4 of your max HPs. Just like 5e Hit Dice you couldn't spend them at will in combat but unlike 5e Hit Dice there were a whole slew of powers that let someone spend a Healing Surge during a fight. Tapping into your...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

The Five Minute Adventuring Day is a common trap for DMs to fall into and it can REALLY suck the fun out of a game. The some ways I've seen of dealing with it include: 1. Traditional dungeon crawls. If the treasure is deep in the dungeon and you can't take long rests in the dungeon the DM can...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Of course. My more objective issue is that 5e has both slow combat (relative to TSR-D&D) and doesn't work well unless you have a lot of encounters per long rest. This means that often you can't end a session with a long rest which is a real pain for me for real world logistical concerns. If...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

For me my most successful games of 5e as both a player and a DM have been "you're on a boat!" games (pirates, Greek Myth, and Star Wars) as "no long resting except in a friendly port" ended up feeling more natural than a week's rest and it made it feel more natural to swap players in and out...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Yes, but that's still an attritional challenge just stretched over two in-game days.

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Well the issue here is that WotC may not care about wargamerish attritional challenge but wargamerish attritional challenge cares about them. What I mean by that is that 5.*e is based around having six or so encounters per long rest and a lot of the game just doesn't work right if you only have...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Don't think that's too much of a distinction, all forms of healing work out as extensions of the HP pool, although using spell slots that way has an opportunity cost (can't use the spell slots for other stuff) which Healing Surges don't have. Yes, that's exactly the sort of design I'd like for...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Too Many Numbers 0e Hit points: fighting-men get 1d6+1 HPs at first level, 2d6 at second level 3d6 at third level, 4d6 at fourth level, and 5d6+1 at 5th level, clerics and magic-users gain HPs slightly slower. Thieves aren’t core so we’ll throw in a second fighting man. 14 Con isn’t enough to...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

The Problem with Healing Powercreep I just went and crunched some numbers so see how healing stacks up across the different editions. For all of the different editions I’m assuming 4 PCs of the classic four classes (fighting-man/fighter, cleric, thief/rogue, and magic-user/wizard). To try to...

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Nothing in the text of Command that indicates that pointing does naughty word. Casting something dumb like Command "Kill" would get the NPC trying to kill the caster most likely at my table.

    D&D 5E (2024) So Class Complexity...

Yeah, I remember especially in 3.5e you could make these intricate builds based on getting a whole bunch of synergies to align just right...and then do the exact same thing every single round of combat.

    D&D 5E (2024) 5.24e New Cleric

I can see both sides of the tactical issue WRT healing in 5.5e. On the one hand the 5e version of Cure Wounds can be a real newbie trap and I absolutely HATE newbie traps. But making 5.5e combat overall more forgiving is annoying when it is, if anything, too forgiving already rubs me the wrong...

D&D 5E (2024) Best fix for conjure minor elemental?

I would also prefer if when my character conjures minor elements he conjures minor elements, not a mobile AoE. Just cut down on the number of critters you can summon at once and/or require you to use your action to command the critters to prevent the action economy from getting borked.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Well if you want to bring realism in the effective range of longbows is surprisingly short. How far you can shoot an arrow and how far you can shoot an arrow and still kill a dude a very very different things: Collections: Archery, Distance and ‘Kiting’ Link is to a blog post by a military...
