D&D 5E (2014) No cover rules, just dis/adv, what breaks?

Ah, there's the math! I couldn't find it right now, thanks. That's lot bigger shift than expected, sheesh.

D&D 5E (2014) No cover rules, just dis/adv, what breaks?

It comes up as this weird ONE thing that is done differently. Ah, good point. Viewing it as an effective -5 penalty (on rolls where you just needed 11 to hit, say, since it takes you from 50% success down to 25% success rate), does make half cover huge. Hmm.

D&D 5E (2014) No cover rules, just dis/adv, what breaks?

The average die result difference IS closer to 3. But, the effect it has on outcome for the most common rolls is COMPARABLE to 4 or 5... So yes, it could be much worse than expected.

D&D 5E (2014) No cover rules, just dis/adv, what breaks?

Okay, firing into melee, you cannot assume the other participants give minor cover (+2 to AC), and instead you'd take the Disadvantage hit or nothing... Seeing how Disadvantage is -3 on average, that might be close enough? Would just hit archer Rogues bad. But wait, do the rules even say that...

D&D 5E (2014) No cover rules, just dis/adv, what breaks?

So, we started playing with Starter Set + Basic rules, and the interaction of concealment and cover is just ugly, with this being the one place where you have modifiers all of a sudden. What issues arise if we just ignore cover rules completely, and just give dis/advantage as appropriate...

    Least Favorite (Core) D&D Race

I hate the half-races. Since I had to pick just one poll option, I voted half-elves, since there's more than enough elves. Damn elf-wankery and multitude of subraces. And 4e keeps it up, with three different elves listed right in the three core books.

New errata for core books, dated 7/2/2008

My thought as well. Not succeeding = failure leads towards a player rather skipping their turn than attempting an unlikely thing. So I think I'm giving up on WotC handling the issue, and using an alternative way of doing things.

    Opposed Skill Challenges

This looks like a lovely idea. I'm going to use this as a base for my skill challenges. It's short and easy, though I'd like to see some maths on this. One change I'm going to make, is have the targeted player dictate what skill he is going to roll to oppose the GM's attack roll with, instead...

Have you bought the 4E PDFs?

Nope. I've already bought the physical books, so I have no qualms about using Those Other downloaded PDFs for my quick reference needs.

    Help Me Fix The Cleric

You defend better by attacking foes. Also, there is this class feature called Healing Word. Perhaps you've heard of it?

Only tested it briefly, but this looks to be a great aid.
