TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

"N-word" wasn't the name, but that was their fake Star Frontiers.

    Optimization and optimizers...

It's really not, except inasmuch that it's all "playing the game", and we're all on a continuum. Every one of us. Somewhere down at one end of extreme optimization is the guy who wants to play Pun-Pun in an actual game. And somewhere at the extreme opposite end is the guy who for the lulz...

    Optimization and optimizers...

Wut? I'm revising history, Stalin-style, if I suggest that people who think "optimizer" is a pejorative might be doing so due to associations with the "Character Optimization" forum which spawned Pun-Pun? I didn't spend a lot of time in those forums specifically because the average level of...

    Optimization and optimizers...

It may help to note that historically (to my recollection), "munchkin" originated in the early 80s as a pejorative nickname to refer specifically to young players who had no experience in grown-up wargaming/sci-fi/RPG culture and this had not acculturated to its norms and were frequently...

    Optimization and optimizers...

I think this is leaning a bit into prescriptivism, to be fair. I tend to agree that in my experience there is a difference between optimization and breaking the rules/munchkining, but I have to concede that these definitions are not universal. The origin of Pun-Pun was the WotC 3E and 3.5...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I think you're excluding the middle. It's at least partly an advert, and should be a showcase for the awesome things the game does better than/differently from D&D.

    Our Physical Fitness

I did manage to get back in last night. Dumbbell bench, dumbbell behind-the-head skull crushers, dumbbell seated inclined curls, and dumbbell lateral raises, three sets of each plus a few drop sets to extend them. It felt good to get back, and the temperature seems to have broken a bit today...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Well, every now and then I DO kick the living s*** outta me. Can we forget about the things I said when I was drunk?

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Yeah, it's tricky. Ideally the players should learn the rules and know what the heck they're doing. OTOH, quite a lot of our players in real life don't do that, so playing with those kind of players is showing off an extremely common use-case.

    The EN World Selfie Thread

Quick selfie at a local Irish pub for a punk show recently. Burly Girlies and The Worst were both amazing.

    Our Physical Fitness

This heat wave has been death to my motivation, and I was up late both nights over the weekend, so I have not made it back to the gym since the 18th. Which feels crappy. OTOH I have been willing myself to continue the daily PT exercises regardless; I think I skipped one day after being up...

    D&D 5E (2024) Learning 2024 D&D rules by converting classic 1e Greyhawk encounters to 5e

Love this whole post. This bit jumped out at me though.... In my last campaign the party found an undead-slaying sword and I gave it a similar detection ability, although that sword glowed at all times, so I had the brightness double (from a 15' radius light to 30') when within 60' and LOE of...

Shadowdark Shadowdark: Wavestone Monolith (minor spoilers)

My brother's birthday was over the weekend, and I got a few of our friends together to run a D&D one shot on Friday night. I decided to try out Shadowdark, and the Wavestone Monolith module which Bryce had praised and is available free online. We had a great time, and I resisted my urges to...
