D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

That's interesting because we're finding the 2024 combats to be much more enjoyable and thrilling than anything that Pathfinder or earlier editions of D&D had to offer. Combats go quite quickly and Legendary actions give a more suspenseful aspect.

D&D General What do you want out of your D&D/RPG games?

I'm a traditional D&Der. Roleplay is fine when it happens (no amateur dramatics though, thank you) but I like a story to tell, dungeons and locations to explore, treasure to find and monsters to slay. Exactly what D&D does straight out of the box.

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

I used to roll behind my screen for decades. It was the idea that it generates suspense in the players and because I'm not fudging the rolls in anyone's favour. However, the last few years I have thrown that idea out of the window because after years of DMing I realised suddenly that seeing that...

D&D 5E (2014) DM imposed restrictions to the game (+)

As someone just coming back to D&D with 2024, I have the following restrictions: 2024 books only and only if I own a copy, or you can bring a copy for me to look at first. No 3PP books at all. No evil alignments. Saying that I have expanded the PHB races with Goblin, Sentinel (Warforged)...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

This module cropped up in an ad on Facebook and looked interesting to slot into my Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign. It's bit of a loaded site based adventure but with a few tweaks it'll do nicely. Picked it up on DMsGuild on pdf.

What makes a TTRPG purchase "worth it" to you?

I have this one and still use it frequently to this day.

What makes a TTRPG purchase "worth it" to you?

I generally don't look at it from a £££ perspective, although if a PDF is near it's print price I won't touch it. PDFs should be a lot cheaper IMO. As the DM I look at whether something will be of use in my campaign or have something I would like to incorporate. Adventures have to sound fun and...

What magic system that uses some form of power points (e.g. casting spell x costs 3 points) is your favorite?

For me, it is D&D's vancian magic system but more the Sorcerer style. By that I mean, you have these spells in your repertoire and you cast X many per level per day. I've never liked the standard Wizard version where you have to pick and choose specific spells not knowing if you have actually...

Combating My Own Boredom as a Player

I'm a usual GM/DM and I also tend to get bored when playing. Actually I won't say bored, more... frustrated. As a GM I have more control over the direction of the game which I don't have as a player. It's also why I prefer to be the GM when I can. Not being a control freak, just I guess I'm more...

D&D General What modules have you reused for multiple campaigns

1st and 2nd edition, I have run Temple of Elemental Evil several times. Pretty much all the 3rd edition modules from Necromancer Games I have run multiple times for 3rd and Pathfinder 1. Shackled City adventure path I ran twice under 3rd edition and at least 3 or 4 times for Pathfinder (it's one...

D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

This is what I've noticed with my first 2024 campaign, and the party only just hit 5th. Lower hit points means fights don't drag on too much but the characters (and their players) do feel more threatened, and it has made fights all the more enjoyable for it.

D&D 5E (2014) 2024 Monster Manual has better lore than 2014 Monster Manual

Do you have a link or remember the name of the book? Thanks

D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

The only time I find fights tedious is when combatants just stand there and roll dice. Have opponents and monsters move around. Use the environment to make fights more interesting. Don't just think 2D on the battle mat.
