When I was running my 1e Temple game the total party number varied widely but was often just a core four PCs. The one NPC they hired in Hommelette, it was solely a setup to get him alone and kill him for the magic that the drow cleric/MU detected on him. They got a +1 dagger out of him.

I wouldn't say that it was because he was expected to be adversarially against their interests, rather that he was expected to be a neutral referee as the players gamed in the world. The ref breaking the rules in making their calls can be an issue.

I didn’t see them used either in 2e but I had started with 1e and B/X in 81 and never saw them used then either. For my experience it was always about the PCs and not about PCs with their hired help. I think it is another area where experiences vary widely.

Everyone from the original kickstarter who is still on kickstarter got an email from Bledsaw through the original kickstarter one alerting them about this. The original kickstarter was almost 80K I believe, with an unknown number of people already refunded and an unknown number applying for the refund now. so 60K to pay off no more than 80K worth of refunds.

2e had little rules things for more heroic fantasy than 1e did. Death at -10 instead of 0 (1e had the negatives only for if you hit zero exactly and lost one a round until dead at -10) Healing non-weapon proficiency in the core PH for potential faster healing. More xp for fighting monsters...

I believe Neonchameleon was more saying that 1e says it is a game for dungeon crawling and has rules that suit dungeon crawling while 2e says it is a game for high adventure but has rules for gritty dungeon crawling that do not suit high adventure. The rules are mostly the same.

I really like the 4e world axis cosmology. There is just a couple of pages in the 4e PH and DMG to explain the whole thing and it is super evocative on its own but with cool deeper lore as well in other sources. The World with its own underdark, the Astral Sea above with floating god domains...

The races from OD&D and the 1e PH were Tolkien but the classes branched out from the beginning with the cleric (van Helsing/bishop Odo/bible miracles), and then paladin (Anderson), assassin (Lieber), monk (Remo Williams), druid, bard, and illusionist coming from different inspirations.

The long term AD&D campaigns I played in and ran after 2e came out usually used at least some stuff from both editions. Sometimes with a little basic material mixed in as well.
