Fun ways to do a "warlike" people [+]

The Kafer's in 2300AD have a physiology that rather than releasing a adrenaline to make them faster and stronger when threatened they release a hormone that speeds up the neural process and makes them more intelligent. If exposed to the hormone over long periods then the effects last longer. So...

Because it is meant to be reflecting heroic fantasy so you play the good guys and not the bad guys.

No they aren't they are a fictional construct, they aren't real. Now saying that, I will give you the nature of orcs has changed since they became a playable race, thanks to games like WoW. I suspect this is the main issue, people want different things out of them now than they were original...

Orcs are representing this aspect of all humanity not a particular race, I always find it concerning when people say these features only reflect one particular race. Yes racist have used similar terms used to describe orcs (brutal, savage, etc) to describe particular races but that's because...

D&D General “‘Scantily Clad and Well Proportioned’: Sexism and Gender Stereotyping in the Gaming Worlds of TSR and Dungeons & Dragons.”

Yes because elves and orcs served polar opposite uses in fantasy fiction. Orcs were there to explore the distilled worst aspects of humanity, what man would be like without the laws and rules of civilization to keep his base instincts in check. So clearly the half-orcs were going to be the...

Can I ask what the problem with that is? Clearly rape in warfare is horrific, that is a problem. Unfortunately it is something that is very common in times of war, either due to a break down in discipline or intentionally as a tool of terror and subjugation as reports from the Ukraine show us...

Peoples tastes aren't all the same and fashions change. I wasn't implying that one size fits all, however markets reflect trends and fashions of the times they are in. Is it any wonder that D&D catered mainly to mainly men when they were 85 to 95% of the audience? If you look at the art of...

Because X sells, and the market reflects what people buy. People like idealised fantasies, which might well be impossible beauty standards.

I would like to know how you would tell the difference? If you look at images of sexualised images of men aimed at women (such as the covers of romance novels, or Magic Mike/Chippendales, they are frequently very similar if not identical to what gets classed as power fantasies, for men...

Yeah but if you look at how much flesh the men he was painting at the time, it wasn't that he was sexist, just that he sexualised and idealised the human form male or female.

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

Okay so there seems no change here from normal play. If the GM wants to let the players build the world and play any character they like they can. If they don't want to say Yes to their mad cap ideas, then he can establish that they have to "paint between the lines" so if the world has no...

But that would be generally saying no because of the setting.

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

Not really the the Ranger ability "Hide in Plain Sight" is a minute, not a few hours. But please continue to ignore the main point of my post to pick apart one little example, that has very little to do with the main question. You original post was an interesting thought experiment from the...

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

Then I am failing to see the goal of this thread, the general way most people play RPGs is unless the "rules, setting or milieu" say no, the GM generally says "Yes you can try" and then either uses rules or judge to adjudicate the outcomes of a players actions. They will often give advice if...

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

So I think it is more Well that's less saying Yes and more saying "You can try..." but that's what most GM's do anyway, so I'm not sure there is any change in approach there. I think you mean say "Yes" to outlandish character concepts and stuff like that?

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

But you said... Your original thought experiment seemed to preclude dice rolls as a mechanic to avoid saying yes.

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

You'll be surprised how tempting it is to win. Unfortunately that temptation is always there, and is very easy to fall into. I've played highly improv RPGs and even they have some mechanics so you aren't just saying "Yes" all the time.
