GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

See to me in this example the flat "Yes" rather than "You can try" in this instance implies an automatic success at convincing the guard. Hence the no challenge, the player just needs to come up with some request. "Can I meet the king?" - "Yes" "Can I assassinate the king and take power?" -...

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

So my point about 7th Sea still stands at least.

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

Oh so while the GM says "Yes but" which you said wasn't allowed in your original post, in fact you called out using dice rolls (ie skill checks and the like) a blocking method the GM might use and shouldn't be used in the "Yes" only method.

GMing: What If We Say "Yes" To Everything?

As a player you would quickly get bored as there is no challenge to anything. As a DM you would get bored as you can present no challenges to the party. (See 7th Sea 2nd Edition)

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

No because it doesn't always have to be some bad faith attempt at domination, it can be a simple as a different interpretations of a particular rule. With the "unanimous decision" rule 0, you can have the game stall with empowered players thinking their interpretation is just as valid as the...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Which one are you talking about here the unanimous decision one, or DM as final arbiter one? I mean they both have issues but it is clear which one I feel has less.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

That doesn't work under a "unanimous" rule 0 requirement. You can't disallow something unless everyone agrees, the player can insist it is allowed because it is in the rules and you can't change the rules without their agreement.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Did you miss the "something that is legal but spoiling other folks enjoyment of the game" in my last post? If it is an exploit or effective build that everyone is happy with then you don't even need to have the conversation, or need to change anything.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

As we are talking about Rule 0 as it was "DM the final arbiter of the rules". You've had the conversation, it didn't lead to a successful conclusion that all parties were agreed on, so in order to continue, the DM makes a final ruling. In this instance a bad player is someone you've had the...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Yes you can. If the DM is the one with final say established in Rule 0. Because the DM can rule against the bad player to keep them in line, but players can't rule against a bad DM.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I think when you look at the definition of arbiter, "a person who settles a dispute or has ultimate authority in a matter" you reading too heavily in to the second part of it, where as most of us supporting the Rule 0 of "the DM is the final arbiter of the rules" are really more bothered about...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I think he took it that way. Not everyone treats or enjoys RPGs as just a game, like a playing monopoly or checkers. I'm reminded of the saying from Bill Shankly which in his case was about football, but can be applied to anything someone is passionate about. "Some people think football is a...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

It's a supernatural effect why can't it age you a percentage of your life span, rather than a number of years. Either makes as much sense as the other being supernatural in origin. It's not like they are travelling close to the speed of life where we have scientific equations to calculate the...
