How Much Do You Care About Novelty?

I guess I prefer the tried and tested trope approach. I like things to be comfortable and familiar. It's easier for most people to get into.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

I would argue that 5E doesn't count. 5th edition is 2014 and 2024. A refresh and retidy isn't a new edition, at least not in my eyes. I will cede that basically D&D isn't dead in any edition as there are still people playing 1st edition, 2nd...etc, even if nothing new gets released for it...

What does it take for an RPG to die?

When a game is no longer being published it's pretty much dead, even if PDF copies are available for sale, or 3PP continue to publish material. My experience has always been that once a game or edition stops being published, players jump ship and it's harder to find a potential group for it...

How to Delay or Avoid GM Burnout

I had this in my first campaign back face to face after Covid. I had all these cool ideas that I had been bouncing around for the last two years and the first 6 or 7 levels worked really well and then... it just fell apart. The players liked the early stuff and a little bit more sandbox than I...

D&D 5E (2024) WotC Unveils Dragon Delves' Eclectic Art Styles

Not a fan of the neon or the cartoony gold, but I'm looking forward to the release of this book.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I don't consider myself a conservative gamer but I do consider myself a grognard of sorts with a D&D history going back 40 years. I consider myself inclusive and cosmopolitan in real life and in my gaming. However, I do find that in D&D (and role-playing in general) as well as modern society...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5.0 Retrospective. Races Most/Least Popular (anecdotes).

I've been waiting to play a Dwarf Wizard for some time. Next campaign I play it will be a must.

How many years does it take for an RPG to become nostalgic, for you?

Having come from 15+ years of GMing/playing Pathfinder 1st, the Pathfinder adventure paths strong points are fully detailed campaigns running 1st to 16th with room for some player deviation but they are built with the linear (but not rail-roaded) player approach in mind. Interesting stories...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5.0 Retrospective. Races Most/Least Popular (anecdotes).

I've seen one Dragonborn in a in store one shot game night session. I don't mind them but they don't grab me like other races do. Gnomes are very popular among the people I play with but they tend to just be sorcerers or druids, rather than any other class. Halflings however, rarely ever see...

Mongoose Publishing Acquires Dark Conspiracy RPG

I had everything for the 1st edition and we played several campaigns under it. I loved the character generation system with all the career progressions. I could be interested when this gets rereleased. Only ever played Twilight 2000 once or twice but did enjoy. I could consider picking that up...

How many years does it take for an RPG to become nostalgic, for you?

It's less about year/time gone by as it is the emotions those games provoked then compared to now. I love the classic D&D archetype that was basic, 1st and 2nd edition of D&D, for example. I have great memories of 3.x but it wasn't the same because the D20 system had different mechanics than the...

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

I prefer it. Box text makes it so much easier. You can always modify it or self describe. It just gives you an idea. I know one thing my players hate about box text is room descriptions. The author will describe the minutia in a room but never mention any monsters or at the very least, put that...

    D&D 5E (2024) What are your 2024 houserules?

We're stick to 2024 RAW as much as possible. The only thing we agreed to include was flanking as we are used to it from playing Pathfinder.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Combat Tedious on Purpose?

I cant answer that because I only ever played 2014 once and that was a short online campaign during Covid, so I wasn't familiar enough and I don't really remember. My experience largely has been Pathfinder 1st which we played since it's launch until recently when I decided to pick up the new...
