D&D 5E (2014) 2024 Monster Manual has better lore than 2014 Monster Manual

This! I was shocked coming back to D&D to find one monster manual and MotM. I remember when 3.x had several monster books and NG did Tome of Horrors to bring all the classic monsters back into the game. There are still plenty of classic monsters that need updated and returning to the game.

D&D 5E (2014) 2024 Monster Manual has better lore than 2014 Monster Manual

No. Just a little more information than we are given.

D&D 5E (2014) 2024 Monster Manual has better lore than 2014 Monster Manual

Not at all. I don't need to know how Bullywugs, Beholders or Mind Flayers fit into the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk or Dragonlance settings. But I do need to know from a generic monster manual is what their culture/society is like, their attitudes towards others, their religions/faith, what they...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Lovecraftian Setting

As someone who loved Dark Sun in second edition before TSR ruined it, this sounds a lot better than the original concept to me. If you ever flesh it out further I'd be interested to read it.

D&D 5E (2014) 2024 Monster Manual has better lore than 2014 Monster Manual

I like my monsters to be setting agnostic but I want full lore as to what they are, they do, their societies (if any), interactions...etc. I'm the same with campaign settings. Don't give me a ran down and leave stuff up to me. If there is something then give me the information so I can work with it.

    GMing without an inner monologue.

Same here. Pretty much every day is my head running adventure or campaign thoughts and even play throughs (in advance of a session) in my head. Even at work this is what I'm doing. At night I've taken to falling asleep listening to a game session playing on youtube otherwise my brain keeps...

Must You Tell Your Players What Adventure You Are Running?

Yes and no. If we're talking a published campaign, then I will tell them the name. No reason not to. It does give some ideas. At present I am running a D&D 2024 campaign using Ghosts of Saltmarsh as the base plus additional scenarios and some plans for the future with specific character...

D&D General What is your personal Appendix N?

I'm a more visual person, so films and shows tend to influence me more than anything else. This would be my list. 1. The Lord of the Rings (Films and books). To me this is the epitome of what D&D is. LotR is the adventuring party, dungeons, and the basis for the long time quest/campaign for...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

Not me specifically. I was using those as examples. Middle Earth though doesn't have it's protagonists casting fireball, dimension door or teleporting. Gandalf doesn't cast Wish or similar. The power level as it were doesn't work. Although this assumes you still use all 20 levels or close enough.

    The new 2024 Monster Manual.

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

For me it's inability to represent differing settings. Right now and for some time too, D&D has felt like a powered up computer game - World of Warcraft or League of Legends. Using the D&D system as is doesn't fit settings like Conan or Middle Earth. A minor niggle but something that I think D&D...

D&D General Languages suck in D&D.

I remember when D&D had alignment languages. If you were Lawful, for instance, you knew Lawful and could talk to any Lawful creature because of it. That was basic D&D I believe but I think (It has 35 years...) that alignment languages were in 1st edition AD&D as well. No one ever used them...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Marilith Is Far More Bestial In 2025

I don't think anyone will be happy with the opposing points of view in this thread. What if we said that demons don't have gender but instead exist with a traditional gendered appearance? That's why the Marilith has always appeared female in physical form and subsequently art.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Did You Take That Level of Fighter?

Probably because I wanted to boost my combat effectiveness if I'm not a dedicated martial character already. Really it is no different than under 3rd edition where everyone and their brother took a level of Rogue just to get skill points, sneak attack and evasion.

D&D 5E (2024) Undersized Performance from Gargantuan Monsters?

Giant colossal monsters in D&D and Pathfinder have always been underwhelming, It's not the reach as I can understand you want the characters to get up and go toe to toe, but the damage is always pathetically weak. I remember, for example, in the 3.5 Tome of Horrors (Necromancer Games) that they...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Marilith Is Far More Bestial In 2025

Not now (although they will remain so in my games) but in traditional D&D lore the Succubus was a CE Demon.
