D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

1st and 2nd edition we never bothered. I think that was because combats were less tactical in their execution. The D20 system changed all that and battle map with minis became a necessity. We've stuck with them ever since.

D&D General What does "This adventure is for mid-level adventurers" mean to you?

I'd say mid level is something like 6-12 but that does cover a wide possible range of power levels.

That must be what I was thinking of then. Thanks.

D&D 5E (2024) "Conversion" of Old Monsters to New Standards

Does the MM not have a conversion guide? I thought I read that it did or did I dream it?

D&D General Why Mike Mearls left D&D, an interview by Ben Riggs.

I had watched that video last night and here's my thoughts on the topic. I think that the move towards an MMO feel and style of play came in with 3rd edition. 3rd brought a lot of new blood into the hobby which was great but the feat and optimisation mechanics seemed (to me) to bring in a lot of...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why are you still playing D&D?

Preference and Other... meaning nostalgia. I would have voted Familiarity too but I could only vote for two. Nostalgia is my main one. When I first read about D&D at the age of 9 (about 1982) I was fascinated and hooked on the idea. In my mid teens I actually got to play and DM, and that...

D&D General It's Game Night! What's On the Table?

We alternate at the moment. One Sunday night (this Sunday) I am running D&D 2024 and the alternate Sunday is currently Call of Cthulhu (I'm playing).

GMs: How Much Do You Curate Your Adventures To Your Specific PCs, Mechanically Speaking

With regards to published/prewritten scenarios or campaigns, I am extremely unlikely to change anything. Not everything will always be in the characters favour. That's what makes adventures interesting. Homebrew stuff, I am more likely to include something from time to time that allows them to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Help With Kitsune Species

My player had already worked something like this in. He chose as his trinket an amulet which while worn hides the tail through a very minor illusion. Any dispel magic or similar instantly shuts it off for several minutes. He has it for the character background as a Kitsune princess whose family...

    D&D 5E (2024) Help With Kitsune Species

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I was so deep in pondering how to write them that I had completely forgotten the multi-tails aspect. That is great and I know my player would appreciate it. So this is what I came up with last night. It is based on what PF did but with a couple tweaks and adding...

    D&D 5E (2024) Help With Kitsune Species

Hey all. I'm hoping that you good folks can help myself and one of my players out. My first 2024 campaign is in it's third month now (they are almost 5th) and one of the players initially asked to play a Kitsune since I do have a Asian themed continent off to the West for anyone who wanted to...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I don't think it is ever spelled out specifically, but even back under 1st edition AD&D/Basic D&D every group understood that you needed that balance. Other games that I have played, Call of Cthulhu for example, follow similarly. In the CoC campaign I am currently playing in I'm the...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

This largely describes my DMing/Playing style over the last 40 years. D&D (and role-playing in general) is about becoming part of the world or setting you are playing. Immersion and perhaps less agency. We're here to tell the story that is presented to us. Not rail-roady but linear. Whether the...

What are your TTRPG Goals for 2025?

Starting in 2025 these are my goals going forward into the future... 1. Continue and finish my current D&D 2024 campaign. Learn the system so I can DM better and improve going forward. 2. I'm in my early 50's now so I want to get more gaming in. I already do a fair bit of Warhammer 40K but I...

When Combat Isn't Always *About* Combat

But in answer to your question, I've run fights on swinging ropes/logs, on rope bridges over cliffs and the like where balance was just as important as martial skill. One Pathfinder game a few years back, had the party fighting the final villain on the back of his colossal dragon mount. That was...
