D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

I'm playing via roll20, so have been making tokens of all named NPCs and placing them on phandelver map in the buildings they are commonly found in. Very annoying that the list of NPCs cannot be relied on and I need to go further through the module to check for changed NPCs or new NPCs. Also...

D&D 5E (2014) Is Grapple forced movement supposed to care about carrying capacity?

Does adding rules around this add fun to the game? No? Don't worry about it then. I remember the many many tables from 1st edition, and having to reference a table every time an attack roll was made. Minimal rules are less realistic but it's worth it for simplicity of play.

D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

We've started the adventure now. So much fun in the goblin cave. They got flooded out twice, but managed to turn the two goblin factions against each other. The adventure ended with King Klarg the only survivor of his kingdom, in the eating cave with a sword to Sildar's throat saying that he is...

D&D 5E (2014) Late Stage 5e Characters... Do they differ greatly from early 5e characters?

Characters have gotten weirder and weirder over time. I have taken to allowing characters an extra feat at first level - just to add something a little unique every time. That said, we are starting the new Phandelver campaign next week and it sounds like we all want to play classic archetypes...

D&D General Is it dark in your underdark adventures?

I love using darkness it my game as I use a virtual tabletop - Roll20. It works really well for taking lighting sources, darkvision etc into account and it makes light a very important consideration. I tend to forget to give disadvantage in dim light though.

D&D General How do you know an adventure is "good" just from reading it?

There is a difference between playing and DMing as well. A good DM can make a silk purse from a sows ear, but it takes a lot of non-fun work and prep to do that for the DM. Sometimes I want to do lots of prep, sometimes I just want a plug 'n' play adventure where I read through the adventure...

D&D General How do you know an adventure is "good" just from reading it?

It changes. I like to have a different feel for each campaign, so I like that WOTC mixes it up a bit. Currently not DMing (I GET TO PLAY INSTEAD), but my last campaigns that I DMed were: Homebrew Eberron - fairy tale, lost in the woods adventure Empire of the Ghouls - Kobold Press - Gritty...

D&D General How do you know an adventure is "good" just from reading it?

Does it inspire me? If not, there is no point in going any further. If it does, then I start looking at: how coherent is it? how flexible is it? can I easily change it without breaking it does it give room for character arcs can I insert it into different worlds The last WOTC adventure that...

Sneak Peak of Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk

I've never done it before, but I am looking forward to rerunning LMoP with the same players who I played it with when it first came out and then extending it.

D&D General Should D&D Be "Hard"

Players need to have the fear of death, but it actually be fairly unlikely. Most campaigns of mine will have at least one PC permadeath. Tomb of Annihilation had 7, but they were warned that it would be a meatgrinder. No deaths and the players get too lazy. Too many deaths and they get too...

D&D General Tell Me About Empire of the Ghouls

Yep. One character in my game died in the surprise round. Didn't even get an action. I've added to the horror by having ghouls choose to eat fallen foes rather than continue fighting. So if one character goes down, nearby ghouls break off from whatever they are doing and start feasting. Not the...

D&D General Tell Me About Empire of the Ghouls

I really enjoyed it. A lot darker a grittier. than WoTC material. It's very linked to Midgard and would be a lot of work to decouple. Here is our campaign journal so far: Roll20 - Virtual Tabletop for Playing D&D, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, TTRPGs

D&D 5E (2014) Single session beginners introduction for kids

The very first goblins cave in Lost Mines of Phandelver can be an excellent standalone. Just put them outside the entrance and let them know "You are tracking a friend who was kidnapped by goblins. You need to try and get him back. After a day of following goblin tracks through a forest you come...

D&D 5E (2014) World Building: Commerce and gold

My rule of thumb is that if the players identify something that doesn't really make sense your best reponse is, "yes, that is interesting isn't it? I wonder why." The players will assume that they have been clever to see what you were hiding, come up with a number of theories to explain the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Take A Closer Look At The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide

I'm interested. I read the 5e DMs guide precisely once, from cover to cover. It was OK but nothing of real use for running games for me. I had thought that I wouldn't buy another DMs guide, but maybe I will.

    D&D 5E (2014) my First Eberron campaign!

Yeh, I did quite a bit of adjustment of these, cut out some that were not as good and changed them all to fit my PC's background. My group was part of the Boramar clan, so there was an organised crime slant to everything.

    D&D 5E (2014) my First Eberron campaign!

Here's our campaign journal (from one characters point of view) in case it is useful to you: Roll20 - Virtual Tabletop for Playing D&D, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, TTRPGs It got as far as the characters getting into Thelanis (the Feywild) and then stopped. For some reason I never enjoy...

    D&D 5E (2014) my First Eberron campaign!

Try The Convergance Manifesto from the DMs Guild. Some really good stuff across Eberron and throught the Eberron planes of existence. Starts and ends in Sharn though.
