D&D 5E (2014) No One Plays High Level?

I've only played high-level 5e in a westmarch, so mostly one-shots. Was pretty fun, but kinda ridiculous, monsters were pretty much all homebrew, and had insane abilities. One of them was like: Magic Resistance, Legendary Resistance, the normal stuff. Legendary Action teleport. 31 AC at base...

D&D 5E (2014) Natural Weapons, How Much Value Is There To Actually Having Them?

I do find it odd how weak most are, so I guess they're mostly ribbons. They could be useful in a situation where bringing weapons would be innapropriate, like in a temple, or fancy dinner/party, but the hosts asking you to cut off your claws would be rude. Edit: I like the idea of extra...

D&D General When do you overrule RAW?

It's the armor that is causing the miss, when it can't realistically do much to stop the blow, if anything it'd just hinder you by making it harder to dodge (and there are moments where you just can't dodge at all, if you're paralyzed or stunned, for example). Maybe big attacks like that should...

D&D General When do you overrule RAW?

I don't think I've seen anything in 5e beating the Simulacrum chain, maybe some of the Magic Jar/Nystul's Aura shenanigans, but it seems more sketchy.

D&D General When do you overrule RAW?

When nerfing abilities for realism, I always think of something going like this: DM: "The Storm Giant swings his gargantuan hammer . . . for 16 to hit." Fighter: "My 18 AC plate blocks that, I'm good." DM: "Wait, how is your non-magical plate helping against a hammer the size of a bus hitting...

D&D General When do you overrule RAW?

Mostly if it's an obviously overpowered exploit (Simulacrum chain, coffeelock, etc), for stuff just on the moment. If I just really dislike it, then I can make it clear from the start, but probably not deny it mid-game.

D&D 5E (2014) You Cant Fix The Class Imbalances IMHO

People can definitely keep playing games they find an unbalanced mess (ask any League of Legends player).

D&D 5E (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

One more reason to not have Multiclassing.

D&D 5E (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

I imagine deleting Ki and making Stunning Strike once per turn would help things out quite a bit, my experience with Monk is that Ki runs out super quickly even by mid levels. At worst for the base class, they'll get to reroll saves and be invisible forever at high levels, which should be fine...

D&D 5E (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

I do believe Monks have gigantic issues and might be the weakest class, but I've also seen DMs rage several times about how they're busted, mostly against one big enemy who gets unlucky, or a hit and run foe who gets chased down and stunlocked. I can definitely see how certain playstyles will...

D&D 5E (2014) Should martial characters be mundane or supernatural?

Definitely supernatural, you can't be mundane and be expected to run into melee against giants, dragons or fiery demons, although I don't think you need an explicit power source, they can just train a lot and do impossible stuff like you see often in fiction (like Batman and other superheroes...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

The party Cleric summoned some invisible angels to stealthily do everything for the Fighter, so they wouldn't feel bad about themselves.

Planescape The Kolyarut has an automatic hit attack.

The incapacitated condition also disables Legendary Actions, the MM mentions it.

The beauty of it is that a Monk, Rogue or Ranger with the Evasion ability can actually just stand next to a barrel of dynamite and dodge the whole explosion without cover or moving.

D&D 5E (2024) Can we have a discussion about the assumptions we make in terms of balance?

Imo, some things you can say are good or bad pretty much regardless of the game. The Champion subclass, for example, doesn't add all that much to the character, the increase in crit range isn't that big, and crits in 5e aren't too strong if you don't have a lot of dice to add, like a Paladin...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

That does seem to be a thing with D&D that you can't actually change the settings much, a lot of the big villains just don't die when you kill them (Strahd, Acererak, Tiamat, Orcus, etc).

If that's how Volo described them, we can safely assume they're all Lawful Good saints.
