Yep they were using the book pre-sales as essentially loans and then their market fell out in the novels and they got a ton of returns, plus the dice game and Spellfire.

There are movie tie in novels and there are two recent novels about an adventuring party, the Fallbacks. One is out the other announced as far as I recall.

I really liked Monte's Dungeon Master's Guide for 3e and the 3.5 revision to be honest. It was simple and direct but the cornucopia of advice for the DM is the 1e DMG and Dragon Magazine up until about 1993 or so and then during the 3.x period.

Thri-Kreen were in FR before Dark Sun ever existed. They're a first edition critter. I don't even recall them being a thing in Spelljammer and I loved old school Spelljammer.
