    In Praise of Engaged Players

Engaged players make everything more fun and worthwhile, for sure.

It's been so long since the last GURPS edition, that the present day is now in the "future" tech level

When working on Adventure 1e playtesting and development, I learned from the developer’s side how hard it is to keep rules from inflating like the universe did in its first fraction of a second whenever we got to a subject knew a lot about. But then it’d have the same consequence every time...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

@Snarf Zagyg , deepest sympathy and condolences from here. That inexorable ride down is such a consuming thing. Best wishes to all involved for time of rest and recovery as possible.

Ultraviolet Grasslands Second Edition Is A Trip Within A Trip

That seems like a good match of system and setting. I felt Numenera fell way short of the promise of its inspirations, but UVG is out there really living the ancient future weirdness adventure.

What are you reading in 2025?

Along with other reading, I’m listening to the complete short stories of J.G. Ballard. It’s easy to miss how funny many of these are. (I’ll list some if anyone cares.) and the Vermillion Sands stories are loaded with ideas worth swiping for campaigns of modern-day or future strangeness - the...

Ultraviolet Grasslands Second Edition Is A Trip Within A Trip

I love the overall book but not all of the caravan-related rules. I would be most likely to run it with Ironsworn or Starforged, since I like their expedition rules a lot, and borrow flavor bits from UVG.

What are you reading in 2025?

OMG. This is such welcome news. Thank you! @prabe , have you read Spufford’s earlier Red Plenty? It’s part novel, part historical exposition in the failure of the Soviet 1960s effort to develop a computer model of their whole economy. It was the subject of a book event at crookedtimber.org...

What are you reading in 2025?

@prabe , that’s a lotta good reading. Let’s see what kinds of things I got in 2024. Setting aside the horror unless you do want me to talk about that… A whole mess of the Diving Universe series by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, from 2009 to 2024 with more to come. A mess of recent Adrian...

What are you reading in 2025?

Not at all. The key for me has been following some authors I like on social media and checking out their recommendations. And there’s a nearly daily column at John Scalzi’s blog where authors talk about their inspirations and aspirations, which is a goldmine of info. There is far more...

What are you reading in 2025?

Do yourself a favor and read Emily Wilson’s translation of the Iliad. As with her translation of the Odyssey, it comes with a great introduction that covers a lot of language details we monolingual sorts won’t have known, and some of the history of prior translations and how she made her...

What are you reading in 2024?

Final tally for the year, 123 books. Last one was Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick, startlingly better and more relevant than I remembered. My goal for 2025 is only 52 books, but there are a bunch of thick books I want to read and listen to.
