D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

My name is Bruce and I endorse this very fine rant by @EzekielRaiden. I hated being stuck in that rut and its equivalents in other systems/settings and never want to be there again. Nor see anyone else there unless they really are actively enjoying it. In which case they should carry on.

@EzekielRaiden : Sorry, sick day here, with my blood pressure cycling up and down 50 points and like that, and I can barely rub two thoughts together. If I’m more coherent later I may answer then, or may just let it go for now and take up my views on character abilities another time.

OSR-types inventiveness where the character’s stats and abilities aren’t relevant to developing something clever exploiting the environment, tools, monster behavior, etc.

So much agreement. I don’t think gamers need to earn the right to have fun by slogging through boring time. The boring part is all the rest of them spent not gaming. Characters should begin capable of worthwhile things - and this should include the capabilities the system assigns them, as well...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I’m hugely in favor of the extraordinary abilities category. It feels to me faithful to a lot of stories of all kinds, and good for taking lid off the overtly magical.

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

So the real conclusion of this thread is that we should all play more Amber and Lords Of Gossamer And Shadow.

What are you reading in 2024?

That sounds like pure nerd fun. This is praise.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yup. Words don’t just mean what I’m intending to say. They mean a random mix of all the things all of you have read and heard them mean, and all the things you want them to mean when you use them, and how and I actually do use them, which never 100% exactly what we were aiming for every time...

@Whizbang Dustyboots : Since taco pizza exists, so should pizza taco. Nothing weird there.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Yeah. Unfortunately…iff vi e got a weird cardio/autonomic nervous system problem, and besides my blood pressure dropping 50-80 points when I stand up, it basically makes me somewhat stupid all the time and intensely stupid at random moments of stress. I couldn’t keep Burning Wheel in my head. It...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

As @soviet said above, apart from trust, some of us simply find it more exciting when we know we share the moments of surprise, welcome and un-. It’s cool to feel on the front line together rather than following behind the vanguard.

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

Many of us need more physical activity than we get, particularly as we age. Perhaps the dice should be hurled at other players, and read when they embed themselves in a forehead, ear canal, nostril, fleshy chest area, or wherever. I realize this might be immersion breaking, but a GM who can’t...

The solo game Loner adds a fun twist to this. A standard but optional part of character creation is identifying your character’s nemesis. A Loner character has a name, an overall concept, a couple of skills, a frailty. A couple of pieces of gear, a goal, a motive for the goal, and a nemesis: “a...

I think roleplaying game sessions and campaigns have stories the same way speech - mine, yours, anyone’s - has grammar. We don’t have to think about it at all, or care about it at all, exactly as you don’t have to care about grammar when talking or writing. People run on subconscious rules and...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I remember when I started wondering whether my characters had cells. It seemed safe to assume they have tissues and organs - people see such things in the course of injury and death, and battlefield anatomical knowledge accumulates. But cells? Microscopes don’t seem to be much of a thing in most...
