Gliese 581g - A Tidally Locked DnD World

Ah, right. "Tidal" seems a bit over-used in describing planetary forces. Anyway, according to this guy, that distance is NOT close enough to tear the planet apart, so my confusion is moot. Cheers, -- N

How many RPGs do you play?

One day at a time, man. One day at a time. My group previously played mostly D&D, plus occasional forays into WW's World of Darkness or Exalted. We recently lost interest in D&D and have been trying lots of other things. In part, we do it by switching around who has to GM, so not everyone has...

How many RPGs do you play?

A Lot. Right now we're playing FATE (a Legends of Anglerre S&S hack), Shadowrun 4e, and Savage Worlds. I kind of wish I could answer Most (... but not All, there are some games man was not meant to know). Cheers, -- N

Gliese 581g - A Tidally Locked DnD World

That's probably it, seeing as Umbran's answer encompasses the values that I recall... though he says the sister planet could be quite a bit closer than I put them, perhaps it was somewhere else that had the info I needed to keep both planets mostly spherical. Roche limit, that's the ticket...

Gliese 581g - A Tidally Locked DnD World

What tidal forces? They're phase-locked to each other. They get (normal-sized) tides from the sun, since they are rotating relative to the sun, but they aren't rotating relative to each other. If you can see the sister-planet from where you are, you can ALWAYS see it from that location. Days &...

    Voting for Rarity?

There's a "quote" button on here, even though I know how to manually copy & paste. There's a copy & paste function on here, even though I know how to manually re-type the content of people I wish to quote. Convenience features save time, and therefore they save frustration, and therefore they...

Gliese 581g - A Tidally Locked DnD World

D'oh! Yeah, I meant 12,500 km (which is ~8,000 miles). Good thing I'm verbose, or I'd look extra dumb. There was a neat thread on here about binary planets a few years back. Cheers, -- N

D&D is now in (exceedingly awesome) commercial form

"Fans ruin hobbies." The perfectly unimpeachable hobby is therefore one with no fans! ... or perhaps one with no products? Cheers, -- N

Help me tweak my first character (Human Fighter level 9)

While this is certainly a cool idea, it doesn't require being a Fighter at all. You could play this character as a physically weak, blood-shy Cleric -- but then after the fight, the Cleric could make walls of stone to hold back a flooding tunnel, or plane shift the party to Arboria for a good...

Gliese 581g - A Tidally Locked DnD World

Nah. The zone between the is called a "twilight zone" because they never get noon (from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM they get an eclipse), and they hardly get any night (since the "moonlight" reflected off their sister planet is quite bright). Even during the daily eclipse, they get some light conducted...

D&D is now in (exceedingly awesome) commercial form

In my case these three were pretty much one big reason why I dropped out of RPGs between 1e and 3e. It was the Baldur's Gate series of video games that got me back into thinking about D&D, and then 3e came along & suddenly there were other people playing. Cheers, -- N

Help me tweak my first character (Human Fighter level 9)

If we're talking mythical greek soldiers, all the important ones are constantly under some god's blessing or curse or at least supervision. A bunch of them are partially divine. I think I understand. You don't mind playing a supporting role some of the time, but you want to be able to...

D&D is now in (exceedingly awesome) commercial form

Are you trying to imply that, rather than make a sock-puppet account to promote yourself, you paid someone else to act as your sock-puppet? I find that... unlikely. Ciao, -- N

    Flight vs Teleportation

If my teleportation power is nice enough to move air & stuff out of the way when I bamph in, perhaps it'll also be nice enough to grant me locally appropriate inertia. If it's NOT nice enough to impart locally appropriate inertia, well, I've just got myself a job as a perpetual motion device...

Advice for a new player bored with his character

Sounds like you took one for the team. Good for you. Yep yep yep. Full spellcasters are ZOMG powerful, and "Climb, Jump, Swim" are blatantly eclipsed by Fly, Polymorph, Teleport. It is absolutely normal to experience growth. Your understanding of the game has grown beyond your simple starter...

Gliese 581g - A Tidally Locked DnD World

Since we don't really understand the process by which the Earth maintains its magnetic field, it's well within the realm of possibility that a larger, more massive planet would be able to maintain one. The problems are photons and ions, and the magnetic field generally takes care of the ions...

    Flight vs Teleportation

Teleportation. Flight would make headlines if I used it day to day, while Teleportation could just save me a bunch of time while remaining nicely covert.
