What was your character's best starting stat?

I try to go for the 20, but usually I take an 18 because secondary stats cry to me.

4th Edition Improvements (please read OP)

DMing in general, and monster design in particular, are much, much easier.

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

Jasperak, it's nice that you don't like anything other the heroic fantasy in your DnD, that's great, power to you. But kindly stop insulting every single person who might like something even slightly different in every single post you're making in this thread.

    When the Unspeakable Happens

    1. Depending on how challenging each encounter is, giving the players a few extra rounds with the first one can make it easier. 2. Let the PCs know that you won't make fun of them if they run away.

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

Yes, never in human history have people waged wars of territorial expansion against those they consider subhuman. When I'm DMing I do give my players a world with shades of gray and I have NPCs react in the manner in which they would based on their personality and their moral views...

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

A quick glance at human history makes that unlikely.

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

And if it was human bandits attacking the village would it be okay to track them back and slaughter every man woman and child in the bandit camp?

    Hitting a willing target

4e has a rule to cover this. This is not what the OP is talking about. Now while hits from allies might not be able to grant effects, there's no reason you couldn't purposefully take a hit from an enemy to trigger something.

    Hitting a willing target

This might be justifiable for something like divine powers, but how exactly would this make any sense for martial characters. The character is able to respond to the attack if it happens in the heat of combat and he's not expecting it, but if he knows it's coming and is prepared for it he can't...

    So, Wintertouched...

Everyone would, of course the feats don't give that. Wintertouched is worthless, utterly and totally worthless anytime you would get CA normally or if it's not a turn right after you hit a creature (and you only get it against the target you're hitting). It is situationally useful, it'd even...

    Help with Character Background

I go for a personality, past, plot hooks approach when designing characters. Personality is a rough idea of how you plan to play the character. Past should generally be on the shorter side, a little bit on their early to late childhood, keep the mundane stuff short it can still be there, but...

How would this NPC react? Need some ideas (longish)

I imagine such a character would play her cards close to her chest. The cleric over to cast discern lies, he's an old friend stopping in for tea. Her questions about his background, polite chatter. Her question as to where he got the sword, something that just popped into her head, a trifle...

    I can't do without the 9 alignments

I abolished alignment from my 3.5 games when it was a pain because of the five hundred real and concrete mechanical effects and items tied to alignments. Alignment did not squirm it's way back into my 4th edition game, just now I don't have to remove 101 things alignment related, I can just...

4e One-trick ponies: Why is it the DM's fault about combat grind?

Also, lets see what happens if we let the fighter and the rogue flank. Fighter (L) hits on 6+: 10.5(.65)+14(.05)+5(.70) = 11.025 Rogue hits on 4+: (8.5[.75]+10[.05])+([7[.75]+12[.05]) = 12.725 That's a 5.674 DPR increase. Which lowers average combat time to 3.4 rounds from 3.9 rounds. The...

4e One-trick ponies: Why is it the DM's fault about combat grind?

I decided to model this using the default characters from the character builder. I changed the Dwarf battle cleric to a Devoted Cleric and switched out the fighter's weapon to have the two different fighters. Assumptions: All PCs survive and all monster die Sneak attack half the time No...
