Your best and worst book picks

Exactly. Manual of the Planes is part 4 of the core rules in my game. Deities & Demigods is useless. Once I thought there was a neat domain in there, but when I looked it wasn't there. I had forgotten the cardinal rule: I wasted my money on Deities and Demigods. (If only it was 1E with the...

    Shadow Walk: Through walls?

Shadow walk is superior in many ways to the higher level Greater Teleport (more people go along, you can go to other planes, etc.). I like to compare shadow walk to wind walk because they are both the same level. Wind walk affects less people and leaves you in this plane. Shadow walk affects...

Pang of nostalgia for "light" stat blocks

The 3.0 DMG had entire stats for single-classed characters of all classes from level 1 to level 20. The stats were pretty hard to mine though because magic items were written as 1-12: potion of cure light wounds, 2-5: mw longsword, 6-9 +1 longsword, etc. The 3.5 DMG doesn't even have all the...

Pang of nostalgia for "light" stat blocks

One disadvantage of the complete stat block is making changes. If I have a complete stat block for some guard, and someone casts Cat's Grace on him, I have to modify his melee ranged attack scores (and possibly melee as well), AC, Reflex saves, init modifiers, etc. If I have a cheap stat...

Pang of nostalgia for "light" stat blocks

The problem with modern stat blocks is that they include a lot of information that will likely never come up. And they take up a lot of room. For monsters in the MM where they will be used again and again, that is fine. For the mayor of a town or a guard, not so much. Also much of the stat...

    Specific questions concerning Gestalt characters

    So can you do this: 1 Cleric/Wizard 2 Cleric/Wizard 3 Cleric/Wizard 4 Mystic Theurge/Fighter 5 Mystic Theurge/Eldritch Knight How does that work? But for the original question: Why the four levels, couldn't you go 1 Barbarian/Bard 2 Cleric/Ranger 3 Fighter/Sorcerer 4 Druid/Wizard And have...

Should a weapon be statted based on "realism" or "balance"?

The problem with the "stat it for realism only" approach is that if you make a weapon that is unbalanced it is either better than everything else, or worse than everything else. If better than everything else, everyone will use it. If worse than everything else, no one will ever use it. But...

    Question about Snatch Feat

The snatch feat says in part "The creature can choose to start a grapple when it hits with a claw or bite attack, as though it had the improved grab special attack. If the creature gets a hold on a creature three or more sizes smaller, it squeezes each round for automatic bite or claw damage."...

Character Creation Stat Draft (Trial Draft Complete!!)

If you go with 4d6 drop 1 rolls, you should come up with an average point buy of about 33 which is the same as when you do 4d6drop1 seven times and drop the lowest of those. I've played in a couple campaigns that have this extra drop. The draft spreads the scores out so not all lucky scores...

Character Creation Stat Draft (Trial Draft Complete!!)

For what its worth, I tried a draft last night as an experiment, and used 4d6 drop 1 rolls without modification for all catagories. Each player chose a class that they wanted to play ahead of time, but the wizard character immediately changed to sorcerer when he got to choose the 18 cha. Str...

Making Melee Characters Useful at High Levels

Yeah, I have no doubt our barbarian can dish out the damage, if he can get a full attack. When he does full attack, it is a thing to behold. But much of the time he has to move and go for a single attack only.

I've got the D&D Spell Compendium- Any questions?

"Every advantage" except the scorching ray is a touch attack. As most foes have a significant difference between touch and regular AC, the scorching ray will hit a lot more.

Which "CORE" D&D book are you most looking forward to in 2006?

I'm looking forward to PHB2, Fiendish Codex I, Complete Psion, and more huge minis. And gargantuan and collasal minis too.

Character Creation Stat Draft (Trial Draft Complete!!)

Pretty much what I do, except I use standard array or 24-pt buy (your choice), roll 6d6 as you said, you're allowed one reroll of all dice if you like, you can't have a stat over 18, and you can reroll all dice that would add more than 3 to a stat (you don't have to, but since you can't get over...

On average, how much damage do your party fighters do?

It varies a lot. My 4th level barbarian has Str 17 uses a +1 greataxe and does 1d12+5 or 1d12+8 when raging. But he is almost always enlarged and bull's strengthed, so it is often more like 2d8+10 or +13. So I'd say he does between 11 and 22 on average depending on the situation. So the...

Ideas for Rogue in Heavy Armor

I like the concept. A fighter-rogue in full plate can limit his dex and thus spend more on strength. If your strength is greater than your dex, you don't need weapon finesse, so you save a feat right there. Plus, you can do more damage when facing opponents immune to sneak attacks. I tried...

Making Melee Characters Useful at High Levels

I never said it was use as an AoO. (I agree that would be totally over the top.) The Awesome Blow was used so that the barb was always 15' away at the start of his turn, which meant he had to move to attack, which meant no full attack for mister barbarian and an extra attack for mister giant...

Making Melee Characters Useful at High Levels

I agree. I love haste. My sorcerer took haste as his only third level spell. But as DM of this campaign, I have no control over what the wizard chooses to do with his spell slots. He is an evoker and evokes away. And yes, this doesn't help the barbarian situation, which is why I'm looking...

Making Melee Characters Useful at High Levels

Just saw your post, and yes a reach weapon would help. 15' reach actually, but you still provoke an attack when grappling and since you have to use part of your body to grapple, the attack would hit. Or at least that is how I have always ruled it. I never even considered it the other way...
