Can a dozen orcs challenge a 17th level party?

Do many DMs do that? Hand wave over the easy fights and have you only fight the hard ones. I've never had a DM do that. Seems very unsatisfying. I have had a DM hand wave over the end of a fight after we got very far ahead, and we were all disappointed we didn't get to personally kill the...

Can a dozen orcs challenge a 17th level party?

I prefer to see it as spending my time, but I'm probably spending it on something most people don't consider worthwhile. That assumes that the 17th level party knows what they are fighting. In general, PCs reply to any type of violence with extreme prejudice. I can't image my PCs sitting...

Can a dozen orcs challenge a 17th level party?

I'm trying to design an encounter where twelve orcs straight from the MM (that is, 1HD), attack a party of 17th level characters. (Don't ask why.) I know the party is going to mop the floor with the orcs, but that's okay. I just want the orcs to live for at least a round so every PC can act...

    Superfluous Skill Checks

I like to call for listen/spot checks when there is nothing around to confuse the players. Once the players were convinced there was an invisible opponent in the area because of I called for a couple of spot checks during combat.

    BattleStar Galactica S2/E7 08.26.05

I still think he could be crazy. Sure he thinks the cylon is whispering things to him, but he never acts on these things, only reacts. So maybe he hears about the baby coming and then thinks he remembers the cylon telling him it was coming. The other things he hears could be his intelligence...

Is Wall of Thorns as utterly broken as it seems to be?

For a 5th level spell that covers large portions of the battle field for long periods with NO SAVE, yes, it would need some kind of reasonalbe counter for it to be balanced at all.

Is Wall of Thorns as utterly broken as it seems to be?

Many times (especially outdoors) you can just run around or fly over a wall of force. Wall of Force does not deny all movement like Wall of Thorns does. And even if Wall of Force was used in a way that did this, it wouldn't apply to such a large section of the battle field. And Wall of Force...

Is Wall of Thorns as utterly broken as it seems to be?

A 9th level druid casts Wall of Thorns over nine 10' cubes. That will fill an entire 30'x30' area. It is entirely possible that a trapped spellcaster with dimension door is not within touch range of all other trapped characters.

Is Wall of Thorns as utterly broken as it seems to be?

My point is that no one has mentioned a 5th level or lower spell that is an effective counter against Wall of Thorns.

Is Wall of Thorns as utterly broken as it seems to be?

Okay, I should have said "5th level or lower." Spells mentioned here do not help everyone trapped, or simply don't work. Someone mentioned fly, that doesn't help you if you are trapped. Dimension door helps you if you are trapped, but it doesn't do much for your fighter friend who spends the...

Is Wall of Thorns as utterly broken as it seems to be?

Most spells are useless if you are prepared for them. Is Finger of Death useless because of Death Ward? Is Magic Missile useless because of Shield? At a minimum Wall of Thorns will require another caster to cast dispel magic, thus trading the druid's action with the opponent's action (and...

Is Wall of Thorns as utterly broken as it seems to be?

Back on the topic of Wall of Thorns, I do find it over the top. It is not just a wall like wall of force, it can trap creatures inside it. Your 9th level fighter might be able to make a DC25 strength check, sure, and he might not take any damage doing that, but he will only move 5' with his...

D&D 3.x What are the 3.5 epic rules

Thanks. I couldn't find anything in the Draconomicon, but I did find a small amount in the DMG and Complete books. The DMG info looked like it was only half updated to 3.5. For example, paladins say they turn undead at level-2 (instead of level-3), and druids say they get twice their level in...

    One With Nothing

I like it. Interesting that it is a standard action, because you would still have to spend 15 minutes preparing the new spells. But I like the fact that you can cycle out all your old spells. I'm not sure about the level though, seems a bit steep. I'm not sure what level is appropriate though.

D&D 3.x What are the 3.5 epic rules

I'm running a 3.5 game that is fast becoming epic, but the epic rules are out of date. Even those in the SRD are behind the times (for example, Mighty Rage is listed as epic feat but is a standard 3.5 barbarian ability). What are people doing for epic rules? Is there an update somewhere?

    Alternate Multiclassing: Gestaltation

So a 10th level rogue can add a level barbarian for 500xp? Sure you don't get the skill points, but you get the speed and the rage and the FORT save (I think) and the BAB (again, I think), all for 500xp. I think that's a little cheap. Or you could spend 500xp and take fighter and get a...

What causes boredom in a game session?

Goodness. If it weren't for the fact you are DM as well, I'd think we are in the same game. Yes, shopping is very s..l..o..w... And it can never be done outside of game for some reason.

    Idea for a Fighter Substitue

I had an idea for a fighter substitute that addresses some problems with the 3.5 fighter. The combat specialist. Skill points: 2+Int Class skills: as fighter Saves: as fighter (Good fort, poor will and ref) Weapons/Armor prof: as fighter BAB: +5 per 4 levels. As in Level - Bab 1 - +1 2 - +2...
