    How to create NPCs?

I assume the difference between NPC and monster is that an NPC is expected to have some social interaction with the party too. In that case, you may want to give them ability scores and backgrounds like a PC, just in case. For combat, though, building a monster stat block based on the custom...

    The d12 Damage Die

You could write an epic-level barbarian talent that allows you to transform into dragon form, including d12 claws and teeth... well I did anyway. http://www.pelgranepress.com/?p=14412

Making an "Arcane Paladin" (Was: Martial Arcanists: I need a reminder)

If I was a Wizard in a D&D world, I would already be considered crazy to hang around in moldy dungeons by everyone of my colleagues back in the Waterdeep College of Arcane Mysteries. At the very least, I would use as much of the magic I studied so hard from dusty tomes to stay alive. I still...

Making an "Arcane Paladin" (Was: Martial Arcanists: I need a reminder)

If you don't mind me asking - Why bother with armor? At low levels, Shield, Mage Armor, Alter Self (Lizardfolk for +5 natural armor, or whatever you fancy), Mirror Image and Blur solve that problem quite nicely. Beyond that there simply is no reason to be within melee range of anything, ever...

    Can Organizations Be Icons

In the default campaign setting, the Icons are pretty much stand-ins for the organization(s) they spearhead. Especially at low-levels, PCs are much more likely to have a connection to members of that organization than the Icon itself. For example, a positive relationship with the Emperor could...

Pre-Release Review of 13th AGE (Part 2) by Pelgrane Press

13th Age really has become my go-to system for fantasy fun. Yesterday I've started to lure the party into the Caverns of Thracia. And what can I say, it does old school pretty well too.

    D&D 4E Open4E: A Call for Support

You have to rename power names, but that's it. The problem about "improving" 4E is that everyone has their own idea of what that means, and you easily end up with a hundred forks and not a common base to start from. You're better of being conservative, even if that's the boring part.

I'm Sick Of...(D&D tropes that you can do without)

TV Tropes jumped the shark when they renamed the Staff Chick article... but that's a different topic. Another D&D pet peeve: Randomness in character creation. No, I don't want to be stuck with a crappy PC that doesn't fit what I intended to build for a year of play. FU. It gets even worse when...

Took Enemy Fire in Edition Wars

It might be worth a shot contacting Phil Folio... Anyway, even if this won't be a full-fledged product, it would be great to hear about it in a few blog posts or so, to get some ideas. If she puts her notes online somewhere, everything in there should be covered under fair use.

Took Enemy Fire in Edition Wars

This sounds awesome! is there any chance she'll publish this in any form?

Took Enemy Fire in Edition Wars

There's a cute girl in cat ears and a mini skirt who plays D&D... but she likes the wrong version and so you get into an edition war with her? Interesting priorities.

How All Powers Could be At-Will

We really really really need to get rid of the strawmen players who only like one edition. Because that's nowhere near reality. Gamers have different preferences and D&D editions are crude representatives for that. Even if two people prefer the same edition they probably like completely...

You might be a Fantasy Heartbreaker...

... if you have five or seven ability scores, which are synonyms of the words strength, constitution, intelligence, dexterity, wisdom and charisma.

    Classes into tiers

What the OP calls a "theme" is an AD&D-style subclass. In his system, each theme is tied to a specific class - but from what I've seen that's not what 5E is going to be like. 5E themes look more like 4E combat roles, reintroduced as separate character elements. Note how the playtest themes...

    Classes into tiers

Maybe. But that doesn't answer the question how it affects a (tier 1) Wizard PC vs. a (tier 2) Paladin PC. In what way would they be treated differently? What difference does it make for me as a player what tier my PC is in?

    Classes into tiers

How does this improve the game? I just don't see how this affects the game at all, it's a label like power sources in 4E. Remove it and the game stays the same.

D&D 5E (2014) Are you happy with D&D Next so far?

My group is happily playtesting - 13th Age. 5E looks promising, but there is nothing yet that made me want to switch. Advantage is a start, but not enough. Maybe if they come up with something that matches the mad genius of icons, the unique feature, and engagement rules. Now, there are a few...

D&D 5E (2014) Do we really need D&D:Next to be the One Edition?

There is an important different between fly fishing and tabletop RPGs. If you think the general fly fishing public is wrong about proper bait choice, you can just run off on your own and show them how wrong they are. If you're right, you can catch all the trout you want in the right way. If...

D&D 5E (2014) Do we really need D&D:Next to be the One Edition?

Say, you want to go on a trip, so you drive by your friend's house to pick him up. He comes out the door and goes "What the f*** are you thinking there is no way in hell I'll be riding in a Toyota!!" To which you would react with "Shut up and get in the car." Say, you want to go on an...

Did the internet change your mind?

Groupthink is a fact. Just pick any RPG topic and compare what people in different forums write about it. Sometimes, you can even tell when someone who hangs out a lot in forum A goes to forum B - he'll bring opinions, speech patterns, behaviors with him. For example, sometimes you see people...
