Point Buy -- more than just for attributes

There are plenty of alternatives for playing a point-buy fantasy RPG. No need for D&D to go this route. Point-buy isn't better or worse, but it comes with its own disadvantages that balance the advantages. I'm very happy that Mike Mearls already announced that D&D 5E will keep the classic...

D&D 5E (2014) "The next iteration of D&D is a game on its own"

I have my own beef with Monte Cook, but at least I have the decency to call him by his name. And lets face it, he has achieved more in game design than you ever will (or I, for that matter). Even if you disagree with some of his design decisions, there is no need for that level of disrespect...

    D&D 3.x 5E solve me this: 3Es and 4Es biggest problem

There is a whole layer of issues here. Awareness - Most DMs just assume that there is one way to play - their way. Which is, in a way, understandable. Some DMs have never played under another DM. They are self-taught, and they were always the DM. Others have had a mentor, and they keep playing...

    No WTF? Moments

I agree on this one. I faintly remember several times where my PC would try to guess a monsters defenses (big and slow - low ref; kind of dumb - low will; totally mindless - high will) So I got out the Monster Manual and browsed a bit. What I do notice is that it is pretty random. For some...

    D&D 5E (2014) The three 5th editions - D&D Core, D&D Legends, D&D Tactics

Of course I liked it, it was insightful feedback. I was just wondering whether you're overanalyzing things. Let me giive my experience. In my group, we played 4E with round-robin GMs. One member is very much a storyteller, who doesn't care much about tactical battles. Still, he did really well...

    D&D 5E (2014) The three 5th editions - D&D Core, D&D Legends, D&D Tactics

You mean something like Eberron, Forgotten Realms... Gamma World... Essentials... I do understand the concern, but I think it's just a dream to sell every product to every player. It's okay as long as each product line has a large enough fan group, and each group is still connected by the same...

    D&D 5E (2014) The three 5th editions - D&D Core, D&D Legends, D&D Tactics

I am quite impressed how much you can read into a few lines of notes. Well, obviously nobody has written these games yet, so it's hard to say what kind of playstyles they will end up supporting. Obviously D&D players are a diverse bunch, so the game has to be written with some flexibility. My...

    D&D 5E (2014) The three 5th editions - D&D Core, D&D Legends, D&D Tactics

Oh c'mon. Unless you are dead set on finding something to be offended here, I cannot understand how you could ever come to this conclusion. I AM a 4e player who is interested in character backgrounds and I read novels. So you are accusing me that I am implying something about 4E players which...

Maybe we should stop using the word "Core"

It's all the power of marketing. Call something "D&D Basic Set" and gamers are like "nah, it must be for noobs". Call it "D&D Core" and they'll go "whoa, this must be the D&D Vin Diesel plays".

    D&D 5E (2014) The three 5th editions - D&D Core, D&D Legends, D&D Tactics

That's the thing - each of the three books has to be written in a way that the rules are compatible. That is, if a Core Fighter level 7 has a base +3 to hit, then this figure has to be the same in Legends and Tactics. Since Tactics mainly expands Core combat, and Legends mainly expands the Core...

D&D 5E (2014) Your First Reaction to the 5E Announcement

First reaction: "Oh, that guy was right." There was a post here on Enworld a few weeks before where someone complained "What is Monte doing at WotC? He must be working on a new edition" Second reaction: "Are they nuts?" There should be at least 8 years between each big number, simply because...

D&D 5E (2014) My Boring but Pragmatic Predictions for D&D Next

Strictly speaking, that is wrong, "rolling dice and adding numbers to it" is a 3E invention. Old school is "rolling dice and checking whether it's lower than your stat". I can already predict someone will complain about this, once the first rules draft is announced. Personally, I'm fine with a...

    D&D 5E (2014) The three 5th editions - D&D Core, D&D Legends, D&D Tactics

(Note: My arguments are based on the Threefold Model. It represents a better split of player tastes than 3E/4E). The thing is, if you look closer, both D&D Legends and D&D Tactics are an evolution of 3E. The reason is that 3E is not really traditional/low fantasy, and it's not that...

    D&D 5E (2014) The three 5th editions - D&D Core, D&D Legends, D&D Tactics

Reading the forums in the last week, I came to the conclusion that it won't be possible to please everyone with one single game. But maybe this is not necessary. Why not publish 5th edition as three separate, complete and self-contained games? D&D Core, D&D Legends, and D&D Tactics. Each is...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E according to me (mkill)...

That's a good point (even though it derails the thread :hmm:) I wonder how WotC will bring back the PF crowd, because even if 5E turns out to be exactly like PF, a lot of players will simply stay there because they like the Adventure Paths and the community. WotC will have to work hard if they...

How necessary it is to have interrupting actions in the game?

Some 4E Defenders need interrupts to work, especially the PHB Fighter. If you can write a Fighter that defends well without interrupts, I'm fine. Interrupt powers like my favorite Disruptive Strike can be in optional rules.

    D&D 5E (2014) Another 5e Magic Suggestion

I agree to that IF and only IF they change the round concept to something Feng Shui RPG-like. In case you never played that, it works like this: Everyone rolls Initiative, with results typically between 8 and 15. You then start counting down from the highest number. Those who have 15 act on 15...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E according to me (mkill)...

Yeah, to me too. Not really surprising, I did play and DM 3E and I liked it, but I did run into its many well-known issues, most of which 4E fixed for me. So yeah. That's why it's called "according to me", not "the super-unified compromise edition".

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E according to me (mkill)...

PHB classes Fighter . Slayer - melee damage, mobility . Tactician - ally buffs, movement, bonus attacks . Guardian - defender mechanics, high defenses, shake of effects Rogue . Greycloak - stealth, sniping . Trickster - fencing, trick attacks, mobility Ranger . Hunter - bow...
