[forked thread] What constitutes an edition war?

I took a private delight in reading the preview books at used book stores almost as soon as they were in print, then traipsing... er, sorry, ADVENTURING!... back home to the Intarweb to mock the contents thereof. Whatever 4e's virtues, the 4e team did a poor job of marketing it to people who...

My DM'ing has gotten worse over the years, not better

I would consider that advice to be simply bad, rather than "not an RPG." It admits to the possibility of unpredictably, while simply reducing it in some parts of the game. My advice would be, "Don't roll if you can't live with the results." I can live with, "Fudge if you need to save your...

My DM'ing has gotten worse over the years, not better

I agree that usage has to bow to reality. I don't object to some level of illusionism; in fact, some tiny amount is probably necessary as a fixing agent, or to put it another way, the box for the sand. But this is not a minority stakes discussion. When a game is devoid of significant...

Salvageable Innovations from 4e for Nonenthusiasts

It's interesting, some of those elements are present in 3e, but the concept was never examined in-depth until Book of 9 Swords. I thought Bo9S was a flop, but evidently a lot of people were turned on by the idea of martial "spells." I kind of prefer feats over 1/day sunbursts, but the difference...

My DM'ing has gotten worse over the years, not better

If the players provide only secondary color on the action, then the GM is the only real player. You have players that are not players. I'm not denying it's something, or that it it couldn't be entertaining, but it's not an RPG. If the players can't make at least some meaningful choices, it's...

[Tripod Machine] Conquest of the Universe

CotU is a star-spanning epic. Enjoy this snippet about the evolution of the Empire and the formation of the Star League. The Empress Astorada, Negus's great-granddaughter, would be the undoing of the Empire. Expanding the power of the Imperial bureaucracy at the expense of the Senate, and...

Putting up with him... Or simply not playing?

This sounds like a player who needs a lot of love. Do you have a lot of love to give him?

    Pathfinder 1E First Pathfinder Character

What is this, make up a new rule day? You can fire at anyone you want. Attacks are handled one at a time (or two at a time in the case of Manyshot). If you don't use Rapid Shot or other full attack options, you can even attack once, then decide whether to make a full attack or move instead.

Pathfinder 1E Simplifying Pathfinder for GMs

I made use of my computer printer to fire off copies of monsters I thought I would use. I adopted a very austere approach to NPC creation; hunting across a half-dozen books and comparing Prestige Class this or that turns out to be a big waste of time for all but the most important and...

    Superhero RPG?

While Marvel Super-Heroes does have its problems, it is inarguably accessible, free, and capable of delivering the action.

    Superhero RPG?

Very easy: Icons BASH Still pretty easy: D6 Supers Necessary Evil (Savage Worlds) Silver Age Sentinels (Tri-Stat version) Not precisely easy but teachable and not too scary: Mutants & Masterminds 3e Hero System (Champions) GURPS Supers Not easy: Wild Talents

Pathfinder 1E Just how compatible is Pathfinder?

It's kind of a tough call. Once upon a time, one of the upsides was access to the old materials. But Pathfinder now has equivalents to many of the old sourcebooks, in some cases, vastly better versions. So it's a plus in that Pathfinder is, overall, a better game, but the downside is that those...

    A 4E Retro Clone

Take a look at Palladium Fantasy and Rolemaster. Identify elements that appear in 4e that do not already appear in one of those two games. You tell me how much "original art" is left to make a case out of.

Salvageable Innovations from 4e for Nonenthusiasts

If you want the hit point to do more work, you could say: poison arrow (1d6, +2d6 poison) and poison is extra damage that only affects living things, and which things can be immune. Now we don't even know how much damage is caused by the arrow and how much by the poison, which is, IMO...

Salvageable Innovations from 4e for Nonenthusiasts

I like Tolkien, and one of the things I dislike about 4e is that it was less "Tolkienesque" than previous editions. However, I just can't see much evidence that Tolkien was anything more than an extra onion in the pot. Strip out the elves and dwarves and hobbits, and you could still have Conan...

[forked thread] What constitutes an edition war?

I'm just saying that a conversation has to move in two directions. I don't object to discuss countepoints (ha! check my posting history), I was simply indicating my impression that I am in the minority in finding such discussions interesting.
