Forked Thread: PC concept limitations in 4e

You know, all this reflavouring of powers and effects seem rather ackward. Are you guy saying that if i take the ranger, call it something else and reflavour all his powers, i could get the rogue i want? Might as well 4th powers be based on generic power templates and we customize as we want...

How heroic should a PC be?

The designers made the sweet spot from level 1, so basically we are playing a level-4 3.5ed as a level-1 4th ed. Yeah, some like the struggling few hitpoints character who dies over a rat or failing a save vs poison. Those are the ones who went back to older editions. Its all about preference...

    Disappointed in 4e

If only they made it tier based PHBs.. now we are talking BECMI feel. Include alot of classes and races of the heroic tier and they would be balanced with each other. Introducing classes and races later will just introduce power creep on effort to make new classes attractive then old ones. Fot...

I just played my first Rules Cyclopedia based game

Shall we talk about printing nicely bound rules Cyclopedia from our printer?

    Disappointed in 4e

The tier system is rather nice. One PHB just for the Heroic tier and you have one year to play out levels 1-10 until PHB2 where you are ready for more.. Just like BECMI..

4E and "Old School Gaming" (and why they aren't mutually exclusive"

Actually, why do people even want to emulate old school with the latest incarnation of D&D? Sounds liek denial or soemthign to me. Play old school games to get old school feel. Why try to emulate different playstyles with different rules approach? When C&C came out, nobody questioned the fact...

Forked Thread: Skills For Original/Classic D&D

I too never had a prob coz never used nwps until late game. But I love the roll ability below due to its simplicity. Yeah, it is static but it gives a challenge at higher levels as well. DMs could easily give higher level PCs bonuses (again, DM fiat of old school style comes in). One thing...

4E and "Old School Gaming" (and why they aren't mutually exclusive"

IMHO, rules and playstyle aren't mutual exclusive. A game requires mastery over the rules has more tactics and management required, whereas a looser, lighter ruleset allows more freeform play and DM adjudication. The latter descibes old school play. Furthermore, streamlined games are...

Would you like to see commemorative editions of the core rules of all older editions?

Are the scans good? I am thinking of printing them core books as well but worried about print quality. Anyway, it would be such a waste if 50 years from now, when the ebay copies of old editions are impractical to usage, the current generation will not know of the old D&D editions. For those...

    Disappointed in 4e

My solution: Don't treat each editions of D&D as an upgrade. Find the editions that you are more comfortable with and stick with it. Then get some ideas off other editions and house rule it into your game. As for the OP, seems to me that you love 3.5. Stick with it, and don't get influence by...

    Disappointed in 4e

So all archer based guys are rangers, until WOTc publishes a fighter bow and arrow build? Or because fighters are defenders, he will never go near bow and arrows coz he wont be fulfilling his role? or maybe wotc will publish a non wilderness ranger to compensate that? shall we talk about...

I just played my first Rules Cyclopedia based game

*wipes tear* its these type of post which makes me smile... I am 23 and my generation are all into computer gamey stuff, but I champion Classic D&D as the game of choice. I started with 2nd ed and I can clearly see the diff of playstyle compared to my friends who started with 3rd ed onwards...

    Designing a 2e Retro-Clone

Start with the core 2nd ed rules first then branch to the Player Options books... Make a faithful clone of it as well as introduce fixes as optional... This is the only way we get to have our own 2nd ed rulebooks for those who don't.

What Edition to use? (Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target audience?)

This reminds me of one curse I put on my player ie talk in rhymes. He really had to come up with own rhymes in order to talk. This was back in 2nd ed, withoput using nwps. In 3rd ed or 4th,to bestow such curse do we apply skill based checks to it?
