    Playing without the GM present?

I’ve had games where this happens. I wish it happened more in my current ones.

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

I appreciated you post and your willingness to change but. . . While I am not gonna be as jerky about it as some other posters, I am gonna suggest reconsidering your use of "female" in that way. I get that you were talking about mixed ages, but 1. "women and girls" works fine, and 2. "female"...

D&D General The History of Alignment: Why D&D Has the Nine-Point Alignment System 4 UR Memes

The audio book version read by Bronson Pinchot is really good. I was really impressed with his voice acting (and that he had range beyond Cousin Balkie)

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

On these very forums, give or take 20 years ago, I remember having heated discussions more than once about women in gaming with forum members who explicitly insisted on it being a male hobby and refused to have women at their table either because they saw D&D as their “man’s club” where they...

D&D General Folks Who Came Back With 5E: Did You Stay with 5E?

Yes and no. Yes, because the homebrew ruleset I am working on for future D&D campaigns is based on 5E (with a bunch of previous edition stuff grandfathered in) But also, no. . . because I felt like I had to create a whole new ruleset to achieve something close to my preferred playstyle while...

D&D General Vanity Frankenstein 5E: My homebrew D&D project [+]

So far "spiritual" seems closest to what I am looking for, but thanks for the suggestions, everyone (and keep them coming!) @Baron Opal II : yeah, "force" is a weird one. Yes, it is physical but it is also "purely magical" which I interpret to mean it can be as material or immaterial as it...

D&D General Vanity Frankenstein 5E: My homebrew D&D project [+]

let's say I want to divide damage types into two groups. one group is "physical" damage (fire, slashing, cold, lightning, poison, etc) what would be the "magical energy" group (force, necrotic, radiant, psychic) be called?

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Is it wrong that as soon as “X encounters per adventuring day” being “a requirement” comes up in any 5e rules based thread I roll my eyes and stop reading? Because my mental health has been much improved by this policy. 😉

Fighting the Gray Tide (Miniature Painting)

🤯 That is friggin' impressive. Yeah, I will put in extra time on bigger minis because I actually have a decent shot of painting the details well (b/c they are bigger in scale) and because mess ups are easier to spot for the same reason. But I know I am never gonna be at the level of many...

Fighting the Gray Tide (Miniature Painting)

If the mini will stand on its own (because it has a built on base - like many Reaper minis) I won't bother with a base at all! If it needs a base to stand, then I base it and the details/texture I add has a lot more to do with mood at the moment than with aesthetics. Then again, I personally am...

D&D General Matt Colville: "50 years later we're still arguing about what D&D even is!"

I think that for Colville, the details of what people are arguing about is not as important as the fact that debating gameplay approach and style and interpretation of rules continues and those disagreements are broadly about the same kinds of things. What struck me about his video and the...

The case for democracy* in RPG settings

In a recent campaign when the party arrived in town to start undertaking missions and adventures, many of which at the behest of the local prefect, who was soon encouraging them to buy property and hang around and vote in the next year’s elections. The idea being that if the party supported him...

D&D General Matt Colville: "50 years later we're still arguing about what D&D even is!"

I know it's a tangent, but in my opinion (and for what it is worth, I have a PhD in Contemporary American Literature & Popular Culture), literature is not a way of writing, it is a way of reading. So yes, it is all literature, if you read the text with the attention and contextual...

D&D General Matt Colville: "50 years later we're still arguing about what D&D even is!"

Yeah. I agree. And while the content is some of the most interesting, I do think it is some of Peterson’s worst writing and it needs a new version like “Playing at the World” is apparently getting (got?). I think his analysis is always great but his writing has gotten better.

D&D General Vanity Frankenstein 5E: My homebrew D&D project [+]

I've been slowly building a printed out black and white working version of these rules and keeping them in a three-ring binder (I find it easier to cross-reference and figure out what is missing in a print format + we'll need it for playtesting) and made draft table of contents, which I share...
