D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

Yeah, man I'd be pissed if the DM grabbed my sheet and said "you are not playing an 18 INT well, so I'm changing it to a 7". I think I'd fall over! It would be funny in a The Gamers episode though! Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

This. Exactly the point here. I wouldn't seek to make it a game stopping issue, because fighting ain't fun (unless I'm rolling against enemies) but it would personally annoy me. So I agree don't force people to play stats in a way that feels like a straightjacket, and don't make it a game...

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

I get it. You shouldn't have to put up with that. It's why I did away with INT, WIs and Charisma scores when designing my Eldritch RPG. Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

I always had fun trying to figure out an entertaining way to roleplay my stats. On the other hand, I know for sure I don't have what I'd consider an 18 intelligence, so I'm perfectly fine "rolling for intelligence" and letting the character and his superior stat do the heavy lifting. Playing a...

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

How exactly to role-play a stat like INT has always been tricky. Most tend to ignore the number and play the character as he wishes. Thus the "dump" stat unless there's a mechanical reason to increase it. Same with Charisma. Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

Ok. Do you try to 'play' an 18 either? Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

I'm curious...Do you bother trying to roleplay the character according to the Int score you choose? Does anybody do so in your group? Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) MUSING: An Evergreen, static Fifth Edition...

Isn't conversion easy enough that old material is relevant and usable? For that reason alone I think 5E could remain "evergreen" without additional supplements. Nevertheless most gamers seem to feel a game is dead without a steady flow of supplements. I've rarely used more than the three core...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some things I don't care for in the D&D culture

Good answer :-) Also, I empathize with your statement that "if I play a character with 20 charisma or 20 intelligence, I don't want to be expected to come up with amazing speeches or cunning plans as a player". Expecting a player to be as brilliant as his smartest character is not fair. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some things I don't care for in the D&D culture

Since you prefer playing strictly by the rules, how do you feel about being a player in 5E versus 3E or Pathfinder? Does it still work for you, assuming in all cases there is a decent GM?

    Buying odd size dice

Very good point about percentile dice, although the d100 might work well with a sling shot.

    Buying odd size dice

Right, shape works too. I've seen online stores for unusual polyhedrals, but I wasn't sure if anybody had a favorite source.

    Reading PDFs on tablets

I agree, the page flipping during play is a big part of why a physical book is superior to PDF for me. Nothing else is as comfortable or as quick. I wonder how 5th Edition IOS/Android apps will handle that?
