D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

Has anyone said imbalanced characters are fun? My understanding is that random characters are fun, and that the imbalances are not significant enough (to those players) to detract from that fun. And randomizing starting level is purely about the imbalance, it's not about the things people enjoy...

This is the list I came up with, based on the info in Xanathar's: 1. N/A 2. Minor Common 3. Minor Common 4. Minor Common, Minor Uncommon, Major Uncommon 5. Minor Common, Minor Uncommon, Major Uncommon 6. Minor Common, Minor Uncommon, Minor Rare, Major Uncommon 7. Minor Common x2, Minor...

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

What amazes me about these threads is the variety. I have cataloged over 130 different ways to roll abilities in D&D, and every time one of these threads comes up I find some new ones.

D&D General Wishing Away The Adventure

It depends on the edition, I guess. In 5E it's not a big deal, because the wish spell is limited. If they wished they had the Plot Sword, I would just have them teleported to the Plot Sword, not the other way around. Now they have to get out of the dungeon rather than into it. I wrote one...

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

I think there's going to be a variety of answers that depend on the player/table. The problem people tend to have with rolling is you can have a wide gap in ability scores/bonuses. If you have five players and you do 4d6 drop low, you can expect a difference of about 16 between the highest...

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

You seem to think that if someone gets a reroll, they get a better chance of getting a high roll. That is not the case. Your odds of getting a high roll do not change if you get a reroll. If two people roll, and one of them gets a reroll, they still both have the same probability of getting a...

What are you reading in 2023?

I finished Scalzi's Starter Villain. I enjoyed most of the book, but I thought the ending failed, and then got up and failed again. I can agree with the comments that he's more humor/less sci-fi than he used to be. It doesn't really bother me. He's always had the humor, and I continue to enjoy...

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

Okay, but that's just a feature of rolling. You have that whether you have a reroll rule or not. In fact, a reroll rule will lower the potential disparity by lowering the variance of the rolls.

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

No. If they both have the same chance to re-roll when they get a bad roll, it is equal. The odds and averages are exactly equal.

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

Re-rolling after a bad roll isn't the same as advantage, which is making two rolls and choosing the better one. Consider rolling 1d6, but you get to re-roll 1s. If you don't get a 1, you will average 3 with an even chance of 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. If you do get a 1, you will average 3 with an even...

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

And once again, a thread that could be about cool ways to put toppings on pizza gets derailed by people overly concerned that someone else might get the wrong toppings on their slice.

Point buy with 30 points, and you can buy a 16 for 12. That way you can buy the average of 4d6 drop low (16, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8), and avoid the slight power loss you get from using point buy instead of 4d6 drop low. The last time we rolled, each player rolled one stat and I rolled two. That gave...

D&D feel/fun in games without class, level, etc. (+)

I don't know if you want to go with Random Dude on the Internet (TM), but I am working on a classless, level-less D&D 5E. The key points to my redesign are: All class features are now feats. They cost 1-12 feat points, which can be given directly in lieu of experience points. It uses a spell...

I like seven sided dice (the pentagonal ones). Transitive dice are cool, too, but that's a set of three dice.

What are you reading in 2023?

Finished System Collapse, the new Murderbot novel. Very good. It had some non-standard stuff for a Murderbot book, while I thought was good and was written well and fit very well with the theme. There was standard Murderbot stuff as well, which was fun as usual. Next up is Scalzi's new book.
