What are you Reading? Mentatiferous May 2019 edition

Finished up the World of Tiers 5th book (which has threads leading into the 6th book, so maybe I will hunt that down...) and the Corum books (enjoyed). I was "luckily" able to time my trip this weekend out to see my daughter to coincide with the 2nd weekend of the big book sale, so...hello...

    Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD

A second viewing was definitely helpful for me. I still stand by most of my previous commentary (I'm a bit more relaxed about Thor), but it was nice to actually relax into a bit.

    Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD

Yeah, when it's laid out like that...it's pretty :):):):):):). Hopefully the movie does her right.

Is that a thing for him? It was an interesting twist and I liked it. The book just wasn't extraordinary. Solid B material. Well, Book 4 just showed up, so I'll get to finish that run pretty soon. :)

    Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD

Oh, yeah, totally. I don't MIND that they were merged. I just don't think it was handled all that well. And most of the smart Hulk incarnations (I think there's a "Professor Hulk", and Joe Fixit, and the Maestro, and...others?) took on aspects of Hulk's personality. I didn't really see that. It...

What are you Reading? Mentatiferous May 2019 edition

Finishing up the 4th book in Philip Jose Farmer's World of Tiers series. I've got 5 of them in a 2-book SFBC edition; there's apparently a 6th but I'm probably not motivated enough to go acquire it. Not a bad series, though. I've been tearing through books recently (not a lot else to do, and I...

    Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD

That would highlight how the movie dropped the ball there, yeah. I like Endgame. It's a good movie. I don't think Banner or Hulk (who existed as a functionally separate character until this movie - another victim of the snap) were well served by it. But it's a big movie with a lot of moving...

    Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD

It was jarring and bad writing the way they did resolve it. You're exactly right. We did see Cap and how his sessions. Natasha trying to save the world. Clint likewise, in his own way. Tony moving on. We didn't SEE Banner/Hulk resolve anything. We were told it. "Show, don't tell" is bog...

    Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD

That doesn't really make it better. Right now it's all tell and no show re her being the new core of the MCU. She could've been given a little more personality. (I'm totally blaming the writers & directors, btw.)

    Avengers: Endgame SPOILER THREAD

I liked it. I don't think it was as amazing as the critics seemed to think, and it was pretty rushed much of the time, but it was a good wrap-up. I liked... - Nebula had a very, very good arc, actually. - Hawkeye. - Wanda did good at the end there. So...maybe WandaVision covers the time...

What are you Reading? Magnanimous March 2019 edition

It's the first. There are four that I know of, all short novellas: All Systems Red; Artificial Condition; Rogue Protocol; Exit Strategy. I read them back in January and really liked them. A rogue security android with severe social anxiety....

    Absolutely. I think it's a smart play.

    OGC Wiki?

Heh. I just paged back looking for the last thing I posted and trying to remember what this thread was about. Oh yeah. NOW I remember.... (It'd be interesting to reread this thread having 14 more years of data, particularly via Pathfinder, and reevaluate opinions, but this ship has long...

    OGC Wiki?

Um, 5e absolutely uses the OGL. http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/systems-reference-document-srd 4e had the GSL, which was an abomination of a license. 5e uses the same OGL as 3e; WotC just didn't release the entirety of the core books under the OGL this time; they provided a sample of...

    Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Sidekicks

In the day to day harum scarum of adventuring, a paladin's heavy warhorse mount sidekick is not going to have a heck of a lot of difference from a heavy warhorse sidekick, and certainly not much more than any other two random sidekicks differ. Familiars & mounts ought to reinforce the bond...

    Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Sidekicks

Those would be hirelings in 1e parlance. Sidekicks are henchmen. They have names and personalities.

    Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Sidekicks

I'd like to see a little more attention & clarification to the roles of familiars, paladin's mounts, and companion animals (ranger, druid, whatever) vs sidekicks. Allowing a familiar (for example) to be a sidekick dilutes the concept of the familiar. Those should all be equally sturdy as a...

    Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Sidekicks

Mass combat & sidekicks equals...Birthright? Or Olde School Greyhawk? (Mordenkainen & his forty apprentices....) Speculation is fun.

    Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Sidekicks

This definitely looks like playtest material. I've always liked the concept of henchmen, and this goes a long way to make it work. Definitely creates a lot of corner cases (familiars, animal companions, mounts) and could use streamlining. Also, having a warlock or sorcerer sidekick cast spells...
