Finished. 5 outa 5. Two thumbs up. Gimme part three; I can read the handwriting on the wall and see who's coming! :)

What are you reading, obsessive October 2018 edition

Read the Years Best Science Fiction (35), edited by Gardner Dozois. Bittersweet, because he died this year. Read Kill the Farm Boy, by two people my GF was really excited about and I don't know from diddly. This is an awesome book if you like an unending stream of moderately amusing sexual...

What are you reading? Erudite Aug 2018 Edition

Just finished Sisters of the Raven by Barbara Hambly. It's a nice and quite different bit of worldbuilding, and a decent story, but not exceptional. I've been reading pretty steadily all summer, just not inclined to post anything. Weird sort of summer. Lots of stresses. Looks like I'll be...

What are you Reading? April 2018 edition

I finished The Black Legion of Callisto, by Lin Carter, last night. It's a total sword & planet ripoff a la John Carter of Mars & etc. I'm kinda fascinated by reading these, which is why I keep doing it when I find them, but man it gets really painful. I've been poking at this one for two...

What are you Reading? April 2018 edition

Finished Regenesis. I actually had to dedicate about five hours to it today and just do it. My brain hardly hurts at all. Less intense than a lot of her other stuff. I could actually keep track of relationships! I have a weird relationship with Cherryh. Love her SF; can't read her fantasy...

What are you Reading? March 2018 edition

So far as I know he's still active. His name is still on the cover of the most recent Years Best I have (I might be a year behind, but no more). I can't say that I've read any of his fiction. I don't usually like all the stories in a Years Best, but its usually something about the author's style...

What are you Reading? April 2018 edition

I literally cannot remember if I read this or not. :/ Anyways. I lost track of what I read for awhile, and kinda didn't read much for a while. I had a hot streak in mid-March and read The Bear and the Nightingale (Katherine Arden); Barbary Station (R.E. Stearns); Elysium Fire (Alastair...

Years Best Science Fiction, edited by Gardner Dozios. You're guaranteed to find stories you like and new authors to explore. It's really the gold standard.

Help me remember fantasy book series! Driving me bonkers.

So ebook only? Bummer. Sounds like something I might like. Edit: No, nevermind. There's a paperback edition.

What Are You Reading? Lovely Feb 2018 Edition

Whatcha reading in February? I've forgotten what I finished in January, so I'll have to update someday, but I just read Jandar of Callisto, by Lin Carter. Typical sword & planet, but...worse. As is typical of Carter, TBH. I picked up that and The Black Legion of Callisto for like $2, so...

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

Finished A War in Crimson Embers; Persepolis Rising; Kings of the North; and The Murders of Molly Southbourne (by Tade Thompson). They're all excellent, but I really recommend checking out The Murders of Molly Southbourne. It's a slight little book that's got a great & novel concept & pulls it...

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

I liked Diamond Age. Cryptonomicon was a slow stroll of a plot; I like a bit of a faster pace. I've skipped Baroque Cycle & most of his more recent works for the same reasons (although I read Seveneves....I think that was him...and was underwhelmed).

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

I came here in the fall of 2008. Vanguard Games doesn't ring a bell, though there was briefly a comic store (card store?) on the west end of the Commons that I didn't really investigate. The games store was around the corner from Aurora Street (its moved and closed since then)

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

I reread it about two years ago, and was surprised at how well it'd held up.

Different strokes for different folks. Some people really love RP1, and some people don't.

Drop me a message next time; we'll meet up & I'll buy you a drink. Or a book. As long as it's no more than the price of a drink.

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

I'm in the same demographic, but...RP1 did nothing for me. I couldn't help but compare it to Snowcrash, and RP1 does not do well by that metric. (I have the same issue with Old Man's War and The Forever War. Haldeman by a light year.)

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

Ithaca NY has a used book sale twice a year, put on by the Friends of the Tompkins County Library Association. Three 3-day weekends, price drops every day. Apparently one of the biggest in the country. Not sure how they do it, but it's a full warehouse every time. So I don't do used bookstores...

    Baby-Faced Jan 2018 Edition!!

Reading A War in Crimson Embers, by Alex Marshall. Book 3 of the Crimson Empire trilogy. Really, really like this series. It's a fun read & I'm amusing myself by seeing it as a reskinned D&D campaign. Very much in the Joe Abercrombie vein. Up next will be the rest of the Christmas haul -...
