D&D General Do you track ammunition?

Definitely a valid concern, but I think it'll be tough to find a slope more slippery than low level magical spells and cantrips that completely negate the need for just about any adventuring equipment to solve problems. Eliminating the need to track mundane items gives Martial characters a...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

Magical ammunition, yes. Regular ammunition, absolutely not. Same with rations, rope, basically any non-magical adventuring equipment - if your character probably would've thought to bring it then just say you have it without tracking anything.

D&D General Why did you have to cancel/reschedule your most recent session?

The point of the "on call" players is you find the type of people who would like to play DnD, have the schedule availability that they generally could play most weeks, but they don't want to commit every Saturday (or whatever day) do playing DnD. So now they're able to be a full-time member of...

D&D General Why did you have to cancel/reschedule your most recent session?

This is an awesome breakdown and almost perfectly mirrors what I was attempting to do in my latest group although I didn't think thru the logistics are thoroughly as you lay out here. I was aiming for a 7+1 with a min table size of 4, but never found any reliable "on call" folks, and only 2 of...

D&D 5E (2014) How many times in an adventuring day does your party spellcaster cast a cantrip spell?

I also hate how Guidance is disruptive to the flow of play. I try to minimize the disruption by just saying that anyone who can cast the spell automatically gets +1d4 to all skillchecks out of combat if they aren't running another concentration spell, and then for other party members they have...

D&D General What Does New Coke Tell Us About Designing for D&D

Seems like you would have meant Red Sox here? Yankees have been tormenting and destroying dreams of Red Sox fans for generations, but they don't have any type of rivalry with the White Sox

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing and ability score drain?

It could work ok if the PCs have someone who can cast Greater Restoration, or the DM plants a conveniently available NPC not too far away who can be convinced to cast the spell. I'd still stick with Rules as Written, but there would be ways to pull this off without it being permanent

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing and ability score drain?

Sounded like they were saying no leveling period, and potentially even losing class abilities for their existing levels. Obviously that's all just homebrew modifications and not the Rules As Written so the DM can always homebrew any tweaks they want

D&D 5E (2014) How many times in an adventuring day does your party spellcaster cast a cantrip spell?

Depends on the party composition but there are a few cantrips that easily get cast over 20 times per day outside combat. Shillelagh, Mage Hand, and Guidance are generally assumed to cast constantly to keep their duration refreshed without the player needing to mention casting it. Dancing...

D&D General Favorite Iconic D&D Metropolis

My favorites are Radiant Citadel and Neverwinter I don't know what the definition of "metropolis" is in a game where with very handwavy (at best) realism in terms of population, economy, etc, but both of these would fit the description of DnD Metropolis to me in the sense that they have...

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing and ability score drain?

He is referring to Silvery Barbs and Disintegrate both taking a spell slot therefore you cannot cast them in the same turn. Magical Secrets does not help with that restriction

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

Ah ok that might actually make more sense for the kobold, it automatically works without needing a saving throw. There is no question that this works, it is entirely the purpose of Vortex Warp. Why would anyone complain about a spell being used for its obviously intended purpose? I mean...

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing and ability score drain?

The only answer is based on game balance, not realism. It would be realistic to say you can't be a Wizard period without 13 Int, but then you could run into game balancing problems where characters with poor enough stat rolls wouldn't even be able to choose a class. So they have to eliminate...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

FWIW I was only stating it is not a powerful ability to use against PCs to break an enemy monster out of grappling (or if a PC somehow swallowed a monster, totally doable with Polymorph). Not that it couldn't be used to create other powerful use cases. In your examples, I'd rule eggs and...

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing and ability score drain?

This is correct. The multiclassing rules state that "To qualify for a new class, you must have a score of at least 13... etc etc" (bold emphasis mine). This rule does not apply to gaining levels in a class you already have level(s) in.

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

It's not even very powerful. The kobold caster in your example is using their entire action for a CHANCE at maybe freeing their enemy teammate from a grapple if the PC fails a saving throw (on a stat that everyone puts points into). I can't imagine any players being too worried that a...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

You're stretching WAY too hard to find physics-based reasons to ignore the game mechanics laid out in the rules. Show me a statblock for Gut Bacteria and then I'd agree that it's a creature that would be left behind when teleporting

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

With a normal grapple, you could Vortex Warp the enemy away to break your teammate out of the grapple. The targets gets a saving throw against the forced teleportation, and everything discussed is moot if the fish makes the saving throw, but the discussion is around what would happen if it...

D&D General Can a Wish spell move a moon to cause an eclipse?

My answer for the PCs: If it makes the plot more fun and it's an interesting way for the players to solve some challenge in front of them, then hell yeah it works! If it trivializes or circumvents something fun that the DM had planned, then I'd figure out some excuse for why it doesn't work as...

D&D 5E (2024) Wargamer Takes Shot At WotC for Not Respecting Forgotten Realms Canon.

Oh my god how can they not respect the canon that I totally understand when I don't even know the difference between a Fighter and a Paladin!
