Rings of Power is Back [+] Appreciation

We were talking about RoP before our weekly game a couple weeks ago, and I was the only one who had seen that weeks ep. I said something like "well, it's not going great!" (for the characters), and someone said "No?", to which I responded "I don't know if you're familiar with the trajectory of...

Rings of Power is Back [+] Appreciation

As many here probably know, Tolkien really struggled with this issue of "are orcs people?" I think by the time LOTR was published, he already had qualms. As a Christian and Catholic, free will was a big deal for him. I think at some point he viewed them as irredeemable - twisted too much and to...

I'm not bothered by the timeline changes, but imagine an anthology version of this story, with a chronology-accurate timeline, where each season has some of the same elf characters, maybe some of the same dwarf characters, but every season has new human characters! It would be do-able, and could...

D&D 5E (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

You're...welcome? I'm saying they are more for the DM to track, like any condition or limit or effect that is inflicted on NPCs or monsters. I mean, that's how I've always seen it played. Players can put condition markers on the minis, and there are similar markers for some effects, if you're...

D&D 5E (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

They should remind the DM...every turn?...that enemy X is slowed or sapped? No - that's something the DM needs to track/mark/whatever once it happens.

D&D 5E (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

Some weapon properties create conditions that the DM needs to remember. On the other hand, combat maneuvers already do this, but at least those are just for the Battle Master subclass.

That's going to be heart-wrenching. Edwards' performance has really reeled me in.

D&D 5E (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

Amen! And yet players want them because they're more powerful than without them. Once I started trying out the 2024 playtest fighter in our weekly game, some other players got envious of my weapon masteries. Me, I'm kind of sick of them. When I play a fighter it's because I don't want to have...

Feel free! Some folks are finding the Numenor stuff dead boring, but it's some of my favorite material int he show - and that's saying something! I think knowing Numenor's fate makes it more interesting, which may sound counter-intuitive.

I wonder about this. I don't know in the lore how long Celebrimbor survives, but I think Sauron and Feanor both trained under [smith Valar whose name I've forgotten], so maybe he doesn't need Celebrimbor for the One. I was niggling in the other thread about how I disliked that Celebrimbor has...

D&D 5E (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

Some players choose fighter because it is the least-complicated option, but now (the 2024 fighter) it is more complicated, so players looking for the simplest option in a 2024 game have more to learn than in a 2014 game. I think this is the OP's concern. If you are using 2-weapon fighting...

D&D 5E (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

I feel the same way about weapon properties. I like the idea of them, but in practice I find them to be stumbling blocks. They not only add decision-points and tactical analysis for the player, but some of them create an extra thing for the DM to remember or track. This has not been my experience.

Rings of Power is Back [+] Appreciation

I think I've enjoyed this season less than season 1, but it's interesting to think what could have been accomplished with the time that was spent on the big "mystery" of season 1. Or on the flipside, if they had really leaned into the Great Deceiver thing and had more than 2 could-be Saurons...

Rings of Power is Back [+] Appreciation

One of the things I enjoy the most about this show is Bear McCreary's scores. For my money, his character, race, and location themes are as good as anything in the Jackson et al films. Spent this past week at work listening to the scores for every episode of season 1, and what's available for...

Spoilers Rings of Power is back!

I'll be really disappointed if Arondir is really dead, but I suspect the showrunners know he's an important presence on the show. I would have to go back and watch every episode this season again to be sure, but feels like the best, most solid, focused episode this season. I think it was really...

    D&D 5E (2024) What classes have improved the most from 2014 to 2024? (+)

I've mentioned this on these forums before, but I've been playing a thri-kreen battle-master fighter, using the 2024 playtest and now the official 2024 rules, and I have to say it's a bit of a nightmare. I know this an edge-case, but 3 weapon properties, 5 manuevers now, plus action surge...

Spoilers Rings of Power is back!

Yeah, one can definitely get too far up one's own you-know-what with art criticism. It can be easy to miss the forest for the trees. I've been to art exhibit openings where the juror(s) will talk about why they chose the award-winners, and sometimes it's work that is technically proficient, but...

Spoilers Rings of Power is back!

So...to be fair and not insulting I should read everyone's opinions and research? Not really following you here. I'll agree that the show has problems, and there have been a lot of little things that have been headscratchers, but not enough to ruin anything for me - or drive me to spend my time...
