World-Building tips: what does "What is the Game?" mean?

So, reading the text of the email a little bit more, I think the author is arguing against just using a setting change for the same type of game. He is saying that the type of game and the setting should be complementary to achieve the overall experience you want. If you are going to choose...

World-Building tips: what does "What is the Game?" mean?

When I think about the question, I think of answers like: dungeoncrawl, wilderness crawl, mystery investigation, romp, caper, political intrigue, etc. While setting will certainly play a big role in the game experience, there are fundamental differences between a mystery investigation and an...

Preview of Halflings And Gnomes From Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes Surface Online

I love this halfling art style. Someone else put it well, it's like a Norman Rockwell, and I think it does a fantastic job of capturing a certain bucolic ease. I find most fantasy art to be stylistic in one way or another, from spikes everywhere, to cartoon expressions, to weapons that weigh...

Oh cleric what are thou? When most classes can heal...

I think there is plenty of room for an "Agent of a good" archetype in the game, aside from the "Warrior of a god" that the paladin represents. I'd be happy to see 2e's spell spheres return along those lines.

How do you surprise your players?

I use Insight (Sense Motive in 3E) as a sort of Perception check in social situations. For the example above with the bloodsucking NPC, I would run it as follows. Surprised Me: "The vendor brings over a collection of pots and pans for you to look at, saying how his pans are all quality wares...

The EN World boards are great for discussing 5E

Make no mistake, the atmosphere on these boards is closely monitored and cultivated by the mods (who do an excellent job, IMO). That being said, I think there are a lot of folks here who have been around the block a few times, and you tend to be more philosophical about things when it's the...

12 new monster images revealed from Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes!

I absolutely love that image of the Nightwalker. So cool. Giff are fun, but they always remind me of the Umpani from Wizardry 7, which I believe were first. One are hippos, the others are rhinos, but otherwise pretty much the same.

I have a very detailed world, but that's not why my game is popular...

As a player, I've found that I really don't like Gonzo, over-the-top actions that ignore the rules. Does that mean I don't like awesome things? I don't know, but I feel like there have been a lot of awesome things within the rules. I guess one man's awesome is another man's staid...

"Stream of Many Eyes" -- WotC To Announce New Storyline In June

Some people can appreciate a masterfully made classic chocolate cake, some people can only appreciate an apple-flour angelfood with acai berry reduction.

Thank You! EN World Still Growing After 20 Years!

Congrats! This site was my refuge as rec.games.frp.dnd died off, and it's amazing to see what you've done with it. Here's to another 20+ years!

    Sticky request

I'm not convinced it belongs in the Older Editions forum, because the intent is to catalog websites that pertain to settings regardless of edition. I admit that most of the websites probably do cater more toward older editions right now, but conversely they'd be a great place to post 5e...

Bump. Is there a process I'm supposed to follow to make this request?

Ever use Sleestaks in your campaign?

This is awesome, thanks for the necro! I've been struggling to find inspiration for the Cinxi (lizardfolk) from the 3.5E version of Caverns of Thracia, and Sleestaks are perfect.

DM advice: How do you NOT kill your party?

Well, I've been doing something sort of like this for years! Mostly for times when not everyone can be there or when new people join. I'm not sure I totally buy in to the thought that it keeps a campaign from melting down, as you can still lose a lot of continuity. But I can certainly agree...

DM advice: How do you NOT kill your party?

I'm curious, what would such a system look like?

DM advice: How do you NOT kill your party?

LOL! That's both sadly hilarious and preposterous. While I'm sure everyone appreciates your efforts to police their games, I think history has shown it's a losing attempt. D&D players are a notoriously delinquent bunch.

Cultures in D&D/roleplaying: damned if you do, damned if you don't

Thank you for this. This is one of the most eloquent and salient defenses I've seen describing why I feel it's ok to depict a culture as "the enemy" in a game.

Cultures in D&D/roleplaying: damned if you do, damned if you don't

I agree with MNblockhead, I don't worry about it. In my games, when I look at broad strokes of a culture, I'm much more interested in themes and generalities, and in that case I'm quite comfortable drawing on caricatures and stereotypes because they are effective at conveying the themes; they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's talk power words!

The Power Word spells were certainly more powerful in 1e, and HP inflation since then has made them much less useful as PC options. Going back to the OP, I think it's a nice suggestion as an alternative to simply bumping up the HP thresholds for the spells. I might tweak it slightly, though...
