    D&D 5E (2014) Walk Like An Egyptian

If you can find it, "Necropolis," written by Gary Gygax and published by Necromancer Games for d20 has tons of inspiration for an Egyptian civilization. It also has some pretty lethal dungeons that hearken back to Tomb of Horrors in many ways. Great stuff.

    D&D 5E (2014) Should a D&D 5e DM read the DMG and PHB?

I think it's preposterous. I expect any DM to at least be familiar with the rules and, more than that how the game is generally run.. That last part is why you read the DMG. And if you aren't running a premade module, you really should be familiar with the MM.

[UPDATED] DM's Guild No Longer Allows Creator Logos On Product Covers

I'll admit that I haven't been paying close attention since 4e. I kind of dropped out of the fan community for a while. So I'm certainly interested in learning! So, without knowing the full details, I get that. I'm sure WotC will try not to enable another Paizo in the same way, and I know...

D&D 5E (2014) How big does a dungeon have to be to be a megadungeon?

Those all do a great job of describing my expectations, too. I especially agree with the point about exploration. Mega-dungeons should reward exploring forgotten nooks and crannies to reveal hidden or forgotten worlds of wonder and terror.

[UPDATED] DM's Guild No Longer Allows Creator Logos On Product Covers

Absolutely. They were given the keys to an established distribution vehicle with a dedicated fan base, and then did great things with it. That was a huge factor in their success. Snark aside, you have a good point that being able to build brand association between Paizo and the magazines...

[UPDATED] DM's Guild No Longer Allows Creator Logos On Product Covers

I feel like my understanding of Paizo's history is a lot different than yours. My impression is that experience with the Dragon and Dungeon mags did far more to propel Paizo than any OGL vs. d20 quibbles.

It's Time To Pre-Order Your Copy Of Into The Borderlands

I think it's an excellent introduction to urban adventures. There is one sequence that can be tricky to run, but it turned out to be the most fun for my group even though I was a fledgling DM. I'd rate B6 with the best of the B series.

Atoms In Game And Adventure Design

This is actually a pretty interesting concept, and I think it meshes well with some other advice about DMing. I think of atoms as "scenes", and as such the framing of the scene is important. The impact of a scene directly ties to its resolution. Some scenes may result in nothing but setting...

Kate Welch is WotC's New D&D Designer

If I recall, a lot of the initial excitement with this position was because the description implied that the position would be responsible for a new setting book. With all of the conversations about the 5e approach to setting resources, that is what originally focused the spotlight on the...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

An interesting alternative is that encounter difficulty should generally be much lower if you use slow healing. If getting wounded with several levels of exhaustion at 10% of your HP takes a week recovery, that's essentially a "failing" scenario. With this in mind, long rests should be seen as...

Kate Welch is WotC's New D&D Designer

I think this is a pretty awesome hire by WotC for all the right reasons. Looking forward to seeing what comes out of her setting book.

D&D 5E (2014) What constitutes "DM Friendly" adventure / module in your opinion?

For me, DM friendly starts with the organization of information. I need to be able to pick out the important details of an event or encounter area on the fly, when it's needed, without flipping through pages and scanning dense paragraphs of text. The next thing that helps is numerous NPCs with...

D&D 5E (2014) Chris Cocks WotC CEO interviewed by RollingStone

I'm not actually making that claim. But there is empirical evidence on these boards that some people are dissatisfied. My only point is that it's easy to conflate commercial success with customer satisfaction, when it's a lot more complicated than that. From my own perspective, I'm thrilled...

D&D 5E (2014) Chris Cocks WotC CEO interviewed by RollingStone

Sure, but have you ever begrudgingly made a purchase? Maybe you picked out a paint color that wasn't what you really wanted, but it was the closest thing they had? You spent money on it, but you weren't really satisfied. So it was a successful business strategy, but it doesn't mean the...
