D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

I guess I can see that. For me there's a pretty stark contrast between TSR D&D up through 2nd edition and WotC D&D beginning with 3rd. I can see why players who were very into 3e and/or 4e would say 5e is "rulings over rules", but when I think of my 2nd edition days... hoooo boy those games...

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

It’s interesting that you went to mechanics first as where you get that 2nd edition feel from. For me, 2nd ed was all about the lore and just going crazy with lore. By my completely anecdotal/personal metric, 5e’s lore is anemic in comparison. Thus, on that front, I would disagree with Chris...

[OOC] Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden [recruiting 1 player]

EDIT: Oh shoot, that last paragraph wasn’t supposed to be there! (I copy-paste from the RotFM adventure when guiding my area descriptions but then I deviate from that according to our game needs, and I must have forgotten to delete that). Fixed it now! Thank you for catching it Taran!

[OOC] Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden [recruiting 1 player]

No problem. The giants rats are not attacking. They're responding like wild animals usually do to people...dashing away a safe distance (west toward the split-T passage) and then watching to see what you do next. Generally here's how I do initiative for PbP... There may be an "inciting event"...

[OOC] Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden [recruiting 1 player]

My mistake. Will correct when next posting map and have time. If it’s “want to kill rats”, no need initiative. If it’s “want to attack cultists”, yeah we’d do initiative. Initiative is set for the PCs (you don’t roll). I roll for monsters (using a tighter bandwidth). Details in house rule...

(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

GM POST Aric, in giant spider form, ferries the entire party to the waterfall mouth. The narrow passage churns with fast-moving water below you, as one-by-one you brace yourselves against outcroppings in the walls, moving carefully to avoid slipping into the current and being swept down into...

[OOC] Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden [recruiting 1 player]

@Aethmud @happylace @Neurotic @VLAD the Destroyer @TaranTheWanderer Sounds like your plan is to “ferry” the party (sans Jack who flies) - and the kobold leader Trex? - across to the narrow waterfall passage. The waterfall sound should automatically conceal sounds of your sneaking from cultists...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

Are gnomes monsters and do they have…a lair?

    D&D 5E (2024) I have a Monster Manual. AMA!

@FitzTheRuke Are there monsters that could be conceivable summoned that restrict ability to take Reactions? If you’ve noticed any. Asking for a friend fighting a 2024 dragon with legendary reactions. ;) Edit: Sort of a double question as I don’t know how summon spells work in 2024, if there are...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

For sure! I’m an old hand. It’s more for younger/newer players like my nephew and friend’s kids I’m asking for.

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

Are there species trait templates offered in the new MM? For example, “drow uses the scout stats”…and then you have list of drow traits (faerie Fire, 120’ dark vision, etc)? Or is it just the scout stats and nothing to differentiate drow scout from svirfneblin scout?

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

The YouTube video -that I can’t remember creator of- where I heard him reference that …something Goblin something blog interview with Jeremy (I looked it up but feels like ages ago)… in that video the creator drew a parallel to the internal WotC approach and the 2024 playtest of the Rogue’s...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

I don’t know either. I’m sure other folks have ideas about why WotC chooses not to be transparent with their monster design/math process. I can offer one insight…from something Goblin something blog… interview with Jeremy where he describes their internal process of translating conditions into...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

There is absolutely a system – lots of references Jeremy Crawford made to spreadsheets/maths used internally in interviews. I've posted them before, don't have time to look them up again.

If you're thinking of going along the Northeast waterfall passage... it's a tight squeeze for Medium creatures. Jack, Lumorolur, and Logrim (and kobolds) would fit no problem. @Steve Gorak Aric, in Large spider form, wouldn't be able to fit in that passage.
