DMs Guild [Design Notes] Forgotten Realms Travel Guide: Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara

What Year Is It? If you’re planning on writing a Forgotten Realms supplement, time is your enemy. Wizards of the Coast is constantly releasing new Forgotten Realms products, and quite a few of them advance the setting’s timeline. No matter what you write in your supplement, there’s a good...

DMs Guild [Design Notes] Forgotten Realms Travel Guide: Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara

Plots and Rumors One of the main goals of the Forgotten Realms Trail Guide is to compile and curate setting lore from older sources, especially setting lore which isn’t likely to appear in upcoming releases from Wizards of the Coast. My objective is to present that information in a new format...

    D&D 5E (2024) How Do I Make a Beast Rider?

The Sidekick rules from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are another possible option. Those should be compatible with the 2024 rules. They would require some buy-in from the DM and the other players, though, possibly including sidekicks for the other PCs.

    Explain Alien Covenant to me!

Well, now I want a sequel to Aliens in which weather conditions produce a swarm of winged Xenomorph queens which descend upon civilization like locusts. (For thematic reasons, I'm assuming the necessary weather conditions are "perpetually dark and gloomy.")

    Explain Alien Covenant to me!

You explained my point much better than I did. David is trying to claim credit for creating a life form someone else created for him. He's like someone taking an existing painting, running it through a couple filters, and claiming he's "created" a new painting. Although I suppose one could...

    Explain Alien Covenant to me!

David's lying about creating the Xenomorphs. Alien Vs. Predator establishes that human-incubated Xenomorphs predate David by thousands of years. All David did was fiddle around with stolen alien tech until he discovered what it could do, but he wants to believe that's an act of creation. That...

    Explain Alien Covenant to me!

My impression was that the weaponized black goo creates an entire family of parasitic organisms. David's experiments produced different parasites in that family until he rediscovered the Xenomorph species. Presumably, the Engineers had already independently discovered Xenomorphs by experimenting...

DMs Guild [Design Notes] Forgotten Realms Travel Guide: Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara

Blazing a New Trail When I started writing an all-inclusive guide to Faerun, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara, I included a lengthy section introducing the Forgotten Realms setting in general. That was before Wizards of the Coast announced it was releasing an official player’s guide which will do all that...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 House Rules / Fixes

I'm considering changing spells like Spirit Guardians to be area spells instead of emanation spells. The spell's area is stationary by default, but you can move it up to 30 feet as a bonus action.

Traveller Creator Marc Miller Passes Ownership To Mongoose

On the ENWorld news page, my browser cut off this headline in the middle, so it read, "Traveller Creator Marc Miller Passes..." When I read that, I thought Marc Miller had died. I'm glad that's not what the headline was actually saying when I clicked through and read it in full.

DMs Guild [Design Notes] Forgotten Realms Travel Guide: Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara

Supplemental update to the previous post: I've updated my posts in this thread to reflect the situation on the ground as of August 28th, 2024. (Namely, I don't want to call my book a player's guide, because Wizards of the Coast has claimed that name for one of their products.) The only thing I...

DMs Guild [Design Notes] Forgotten Realms Travel Guide: Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara

Great Minds Think Alike... ...and fools all think the same. Breaking news from Wizards of the Coast. They have just unveiled a previously unannounced product: the Forgotten Realms Player Guide, scheduled for release in late 2025. Needless to say, this throws a bit of a wrench in my plans, since...

    D&D 5E (2024) Forgotten Realms Player Guide

Dagnammit. I guess I won't be using that title for an upcoming DMs Guild product after all.

D&D 5E (2024) Wizards of the Coast Backtracks on D&D Beyond and 2014 Content

This latest DDB misstep sounds like a bad decision made by the previous CEO working its way through the pipeline. And it it seems as though the new CEO dedicated resources to fixing it as soon as it was called to his attention. To me, that leaves some room for optimism.

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Having read both of your posts, I'm pretty sure you and @Micah Sweet are in agreement on this topic. You're both explaining the same approach to the rules in slightly different words.

DMs Guild [Design Notes] Forgotten Realms Travel Guide: Faerûn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara

This post is another progress report. I had less free time than normal this weekend, so there’s less progress to report than in previous weeks. (As much as I’d like to work on this sourcebook I'm writing full time, I can only look at it when I get a spare hour here or there.) I had enough time...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

Power creep is table-dependent. If the game increases the average power level without increasing the maximum possible power level, that's only power creep at a table where players aren't interested in optimization. At a table where all players optimize their characters, increasing just the...

D&D 5E (2024) The changes to languages are a good start

Yep. I believe that's the Evereskan term for what's more generally described in the novels as "making the Elvish sign for" a word, or language to that effect. There's also the Trade Tongue of Kara-Tur, which is a pidgin made up of borrowed words and gestures. So that's another Realms language...

D&D 5E (2024) The changes to languages are a good start

Random sign language trivia: There was a Dwarvish sign language in the 2e Complete Book of Dwarves, and a character in one of the Forgotten Realms novels uses (non-drow) Elvish sign language.
